Rainbow crosswalk at Champlain College designed to celebrate LGBTQ campus community and increase pedestrian safety

Vermont Business Magazine A rainbow-colored crosswalk connecting the Champlain College campus will be installed on South Willard Street on Wednesday, Sept. 28 to both serve as a symbol of inclusiveness and to make the busy crosswalk safer for students and neighbors. Champlain President Donald J Laackman will be on hand for some brief remarks and to kick off the painting of the crosswalk with students.

The bright multi-colored crosswalk will address the need to create a more visible signal to motorists traveling on South Willard Street since it is one of the busiest crossings on campus

The crosswalk, in front of Perry Hall Welcome Center, averages nearly 180 crossings per hour during the busiest times of the day. It is currently painted with white lines only. South Willard Street is a locally-controlled state highway and permission for the project was secured from the Department of Public Works.

Champlain’s Student Government Association (SGA) has embraced the project and is providing funding for the estimated $1,100 paint and associated costs of traffic control during the painting ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m.
