Vermont Business Magazine The Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center (CSC), with the help of additional community partners, will be hosting the second annual Water Works Fair to celebrate and learn about Lake Champlain. This free, family-friendly community event will take place at Waterfront Park, adjacent to the ECHO Center, on Sunday, July 31st from 10:00am – 2:00pm, in conjunction with the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival.
The Water Works Fair was started by the Community Sailing Center in 2015 to educate and create future stewards of Lake Champlain. This annual event brings together advocates, municipal departments, educators, and lake-focused non-profits to offer opportunities for attendees to explore the ecology and experiences of Vermont’s greatest natural resource with hands-on educational activities and fun for all ages. Through engaging educational and experiential opportunities, visitors will better understand their daily impacts on lake issues and water quality, and recognize the impact stewardship plays in the health of our lake.
“Lake Champlain is our greatest natural resource and it’s important for everyone to have a greater understanding of, and connection with, our lake,” said Jen Guimaraes, associate director at the Community Sailing Center. “The Water Works Fair provides a unique and diverse learning opportunity by bringing together a variety of businesses, from recreational to educational, to allow people to see and learn about the lake from many different perspectives. Our hope is to find ways to impact each individual who attends the Water Works Fair in a way that resonates best for them.”
Activities for this year’s event will include identifying zooplankton, exploring Burlington’s water treatment facility with storm water management tours, educational games, making a water filter and learning how to test water samples, and much, much more. In addition, Evolution Yoga & PT will be offering a free yoga class from 8:30am-9:30am prior to the event kicking off.
Community partners from across the state will be there to assist and guide in the explorations. This year’s Water Works Fair Community Partners include: Vermont Afterschool, USDA-NRCS, Lake Champlain Committee, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Friends of Northern Lake Champlain, Lake Champlain Sea Grant, DPW Water Resources, Sierra Club, Author Ann Rich Duncan, Lake Champlain Land Trust, ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, Lake George Association, Vermont Natural Resources Council, Chittenden County Stream Team, TieDyeLion Splatter Painting, Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District, and Sailors for the Sea.
