Vermont Business Magazine - Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) and Community College of Vermont (CCV) are joining forces in response to challenges filling positions within the local healthcare workforce by launching an accelerated program to prepare qualified candidates for jobs as Certified Medical Assistants. Enrollment in the 14-week program will be limited to 20 participants. Classes will be held on the CCV Brattleboro campus.
“This is a great career program for anyone with an interest in healthcare – a field with many job opportunities and options for advancement,” says Bonnie McKellar, BMH’s Vice President of Physician Services and Business Development. “BMH is always looking for new talent to join our team, and this partnership with CCV gives us access to highly motivated candidates with the education and skills needed to provide exceptional healthcare to our patients.”
As part of the joint initiative, BMH is providing full scholarships for eight successful applicants to the program. Scholarship recipients will have their CCV tuition waived and will receive supervised clinical practice at BMH. The eight scholarship recipients will be hired as Medical Assistants at BMH upon successful completion of the program.
“This is our investment in the future of healthcare and the future of BMH,” says Steven R. Gordon, BMH’s President and CEO. “We’re very committed to providing opportunities for people who have the drive and initiative to enter this growing field, and we’ve got jobs available for those who succeed.”
CCV will begin accepting applications for the new College to Career Program in June, and the first session of classes will begin onSeptember 12th, 2016. The curriculum will consist of a combination of classroom instruction at CCV and hands-on practice.
“It’s great to see two important Brattleboro institutions coming together to make our community stronger,” says Tapp Barnhill, CCV Executive Director of Academic Centers. “This exciting collaboration between CCV and BMH will take participants directly from the classroom to the workplace and help to build solid local careers.”
The first in a series of informational presentations about the new program will be held in the Brew Barry Conference Room #2 on June 7th at 2:00 PM. The public is invited to attend to learn about program details, the application process and the eight scholarship opportunities available. Staff from BMH and CCV, as well as current BMH Medical Assistants, will be on hand to answer questions and provide technical assistance with the application process.
