VELCO raises thousands of dollars for mental health and substance abuse treatment organizations

Vermont Business Magazine Thanks to the proceeds of VELCO's 22nd annual charity golf tournament, two organizations that provide essential mental health and substance abuse treatment to Vermonters have checks totaling nearly $15,000 to support their work. The Howard Center and Evergreen Substance Abuse Service were this year's recipients, as more than 100 golfers gathered for a good cause at the Proctor-Pittsford County Club on September 9.

Golf tournament organizer, Sue Notte, said "The VELCO golf event began as a way to bring VELCO family and friends together, and we are proud to watch it transform into a wonderful event that makes a difference by giving back more and more to the Vermont community each year. This year's total contributions surpassed all past events."

VELCO extends a heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors, players and volunteers for making the 2017 charity golf event a great success.

Formed in 1956 when local utilities established the nation's first "transmission only" company to access clean hydro power from New York, VELCO's system now includes: 738 miles of transmission lines, 55 substations, switching stations and terminal facilities, and 13,000 acres of rights-of-way; a 1,500-mile fiber optic network that monitors and controls the electric system and serves as a key link for Vermonters' high-speed data internet access. Our ownership is shared by the state's 17 distribution utilities and a public benefits corporation, with a for-profit structure that returns value to our shareholders, their customers and to every Vermonter.
