Vermont Business Magazine Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC is launching its first annual patent competition. Targeting early-stage companies and promising startups, the grand prize is $10,000 of legal services, to be used toward the filing of a utility patent application. It is critically important for early-stage companies with new technology to protect their intellectual property, but it can be difficult to find the resources to invest in patent protection. The DRM patent competition is designed to help by awarding a patent application to one local start-up each year and by providing an IP 101 seminar to address IP questions entrepreneurs and others in local companies might have.
If you have a promising new company founded on a great idea and as you journey on the long road of perfecting, marketing and investing in that brainchild, consider also protecting it.
The winner of the competition will be awarded up to $10,000 in legal services to prepare and file a utility patent application. DRM will also pay for the associated US Patent Office filing fees.
DRM will kick off the competition by hosting anIP101 seminar on Thursday, July 20, 2017 in its new Lebanon, NH office, where we will discuss best practices for patent and trademark protection and answer questions about the competition.
DRM is committed to supporting our local start-up community, regardless of industry. Complete our short application and send us your pitch deck. Applications are due August 14 and the winner will be announced on August 21.

Join intellectual property attorneys Cathy Stadecker and Kevin McGrath for an evening geared to early-stage companies, start-ups and entrepreneurs. No matter how small your venture, it is key to any successful business to have a plan in place for its intellectual property.
This event will serve as the kick-off to our 2017 Patent Competition. Companies considering applying are encouraged to attend and ask questions about the competition as well as any general IP questions they might have.
Topics on deck for discussion include:
- Patents: the costs and benefits of patenting — are they right for your business? Also, best practices for obtaining patents and assessing competitor patents.
- Trademarks: how do you distinguish yourself? What trademarks can and cannot do for you, as well as basics on what you can and can’t trademark.
