According its press release announcing the service, the benefits of Lyft are: opportunities for those looking to make extra income; increased economic activity for local businesses, cities, and towns; and the expansion of safe, affordable transportation options.
According to a study of 20 Lyft markets, Lyft drivers have earned $1.5 billion, including over $200 million in tips, and Lyft passengers have added more than $750 million in spending to local economies. Additionally, studies have shown that ridesharing can have a positive impact on public safety, reducing alcohol-related driving arrests by up to 51 percent and DWI deaths by more than 10 percent.
