Vermont Business Magazine CFA Society Vermont is pleased to announce they will be holding their first annual Local Research Challenge which will be held in Burlington on February 8. The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company. Each team writes a research report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals.
The Vermont Research Challenge has five teams participating from four local colleges: Champlain College, Lyndon State College, Norwich University, and St. Michael’s College. The subject company was Casella Waste Systems (CWST) an Industrial Goods Sector, Waste Management Industry stock headquartered in Rutland, VT.
The competition will be held onFebruary 8, 2017in Burlington. Teams will present on their findings to a panel of judges, the score from the judges and those from the written report grading will be combined to declare the winner. This team will advance to the Americas Regional Competition in Seattle, WA on April 6 – 7th.
The judges for the competition will be:
John T. Boland, CFA is the President, Chief Investment Officer, and Principal of Maple Capital. Prior to co-founding Maple Capital Management in 2004, John served as Chief Investment Officer of the Private Client Group of NL Capital Management. John previously worked at Janney Montgomery Scott in Pennsylvania and Lehman Bothers and Merrill Lynch in New York. John has a BS in Finance from Pennsylvania State University and received his MBA in Finance from the University of Scranton. He is a CFA charterholder and a member and past director of the CFA Society Vermont and a member of the CFA Institute. John is also an active member of the Vermont Captive Insurance Association.
John Conlon, CFA is Chief Investment Officer for People's United Bank. John directs the internal equity strategies, oversees the investment process, manages client accounts and leads and serves on various investment committees. Prior to joining People’s United Wealth Management in 2008, John worked in investment management at firms including Blackford Securities, EF Hutton, and CJ Lawrence. He has more than 30 years of experience in the investment industry. Prior to joining the investment industry, he worked as a research scientist at the NASA – Ames Research Center in California. John earned a BS in Aerospace Engineering from University of Notre Dame, an MS in Aerospace Engineering from University of Virginia, and an MBA from Santa Clara University. John is a past president of the CFA Society Vermont.
Anne Doremus, CFA is a Partner at Hanson & Doremus Investment Management and concentrates on portfolio management, security analysis and financial planning. She has managed money since 1987 – 5 years with a major mutual fund company, Sentinel Advisors, and 3 years with Fraser Management Associates in Burlington, Vermont. Anne earned her undergraduate degree in economics from The University of Vermont and her MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth College. She earned her Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation in 1990 and is a founding member and past President of the CFA Society Vermont.
Jason Mead has served as Director of Finance since May 2016. Jason joined Casella Waste Systems, Inc. in June 2010 and has served most recently as its Manager of Budgeting and Forecasting. From 2007 until joining Casella Waste Systems, Inc., Jason served as a Team Manager at Fidelity Investments within its Price and Cash Management Services division. From 2005 to 2007 Jason worked for Investor’s Bank & Trust Company. Jason holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Vermont.
