Vermont Business Magazine Norwich University officials have kicked off Cybersecurity Awareness Month, with a presidential declaration proclaiming Norwich University's participation in the national campaign and information on a public speaker series along with other activities. Each Thursday, guest speakers will be on campus to give a presentation. These presentations are free and open to the public. All of the presentations will be in the Mack Hall auditorium every Thursday from 1 – 3:50 p.m.
This year's presenters include:
- Oct. 4: Special Agents from the FBI will discuss a variety of cybersecurity topics.
- Oct. 11: Heather Roszkowski, University of Vermont Network Chief Information Security Officer and Leslie Daigle, former Chief Internet Technology Officer at the Internet Society. Heather will be discussing privacy and security in healthcare and Leslie will discuss how the internet works at a high level and the challenges to ensuring a safe and secure Internet.
- Oct. 18: Stacey Wright, Director of Cyber Intelligence for the Multi State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) will be discussing a variety of cybersecurity topics.
- Oct. 25: George J. Silowash, Norwich University chief information security officer (CISO), will give a lecture on privacy and security in this age of social media and connected devices.
Several CISO Interns will also be giving a presentation at the Northfield Middle & High School Auditorium about "Keeping Children Safe in the Digital Era" on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. This event is also free and open to the public.
Finally, as part of cybersecurity awareness month, public service announcements are displayed across campus, and Norwich’s annual employee cybersecurity training campaign has begun.
“Cybercriminals do not let down their guard, and neither do we,” CISO Silowash said. “We are constantly experiencing attacks to gain access to our systems and data, and each one of us plays a critical role in protecting our systems.”
Ranked #2 by the Ponemon Institute for cyber security in the U.S., Norwich University programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation for cyber security education. Norwich University is recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and has received designation as a Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE) by the Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3). Beginning in 2002, Norwich University became a member of what is now called National Science Foundation’s Cyber Corps: Scholarship for Service program. Norwich is also home to GenCyber@NU, a National Security Agency and National Science Foundation-funded cybersecurity camp for high school students.
