With services now set for U.S. Senator John McCain, Governor Phil Scott has ordered flags to half-staff beginning at sunrise on Wednesday, August 29, the day of Senator McCain’s first service. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset onSunday, September 2, following Senator McCain’s interment at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

As noted, Senator McCain’s memorial services begin with services in Arizonaon Wednesday. Sen. McCain will then lie in state in Washington, D.C. with additional services to followSaturdayandSunday.

Upon Senator McCain’s deathon Saturday, Governor Scott issued the following statement:

“At a time when our country is in need of more and better role models, I’m saddened we have lost another with the passing of Senator John McCain. My thoughts and prayers are with the McCain family, his staff and his colleagues. Senator McCain bravely served our country as a young man and went on to be a leader of tremendous courage, conviction and civility in the U.S. Senate. I appreciate the legacy of dignity, character and candor he’s left. I hope he will continue to inspire all of us to be better to each other even when we face difficult times and complex challenges as individuals and as a nation.”

Governor Scott noted Senator McCain’s military service, time as a prisoner of war, and commitment and leadership as a public servant in his decision to order flags to half-staff in the Senator’s honor.

** Rule: When the U.S. Flag is lowered, the Vermont flag and POW flag must also be lowered, the U.S. Flag must always fly above or equal to any other flags that are flown.
