SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Vermont State Police Edith Whitney, 87, of Tunbridge, Vermont, died Monday night, July 2, 2018, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. An autopsy has been scheduled for today, Tuesday, July 3, at the New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner’s Office. The Vermont State Police investigation into this incident is active an ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation-Troop B-East at 802-234-9933.
Please also note that Ms. Whitney’s age is 87. Her age was stated incorrectly in earlier news releases on this case.

Investigators have found that the victim in this matter, Edith Whitney, was struck by a “projectile” believed to be a bullet. At this time no projectiles or bullets have been recovered in relation to this matter. Subjects in the area when this incident occurred, who were shooting a firearm at the time, have been identified and interviewed. A firearm, ammunition and spent ammunition casings have been recovered by investigators. At this time this appears to have been an accident and there is no cause for public alarm. The victim is still currently admitted at DHMC in the ICU and listed in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.

The victim, Edith Whitney, is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at DHMC and listed in critical condition.

On 06302018 at approximately 2029 hours the Vermont State Police were contacted regarding an apparent shooting victim located at 240 Spring Road in Tunbridge.
Members of the Vermont State Police Field Force Division, Bureau of Criminal Investigation Division and members of the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, responded to investigate.
Investigators learned that the female victim had been outside her residence when she was struck with a projectile. Friends and neighbors immediately began rendering the female aid and she was later transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon NH. The female was identified as 87-year-old Edith Whitney of Tunbridge. Whitney would undergo emergency surgery at DHMC and her condition at this time is unknown.
The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
