Howard Center Supported Employment Program gets grant from People’s United

Vermont Business Magazine Project Hire, Howard Center’s supported employment program for individuals with a developmental disability, recently received a $2,500 grant from the People’s United Community Foundation. Kathy Schirling, Director of Marketing and Community Services at People’s United Bank and Liaison to the People’s United Community Foundation, says, “Supporting our community is a priority at People’s United, and I can’t think of a better way to support Howard Center and the people it serves. Helping people find meaningful work where they can make contributions is a win-win.”

Since Project Hire began more than 35 years ago, 525 businesses have provided employment support to more than 500 individuals. Last year alone, 175 people received support and earned a collective total of $1,031,427. According to Karen Hussey, Project Hire Coordinator, “We are grateful for the community support and the participation of local businesses. Their support is essential in helping individuals find employment opportunities and is an important step on their path to living as independently as possible.”
