UVM launches emergency lifesaving program

Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont this week launched the CAT ECare lifesaving program, which consists of dozens of emergency stations with life-saving equipment and ongoing training opportunities for UVM employees and students. UVM has 38 publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Under the new program, additional equipment is being purchased and the emergency stations will be branded as CAT ECare stations. New stations will be added in the coming years and each one will contain AEDs, bleeding control kits and Narcan®. Students will be trained as program instructors.

UVM President Suresh Garimella, Provost Patty Prelock, two student interns, two UVMMC physicians/Larner College of Medicine alums and professors (Emergency and Cardiovascular Medicine) participated in the kickoff event.

The program launch was followed by a 3-hour Heartsaver certification class including CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed, and Narcan® use. Two dozen faculty and staff members participated in the inaugural training.

CAT ECare is a collaboration among undergraduate Public Health students, UVM Emergency Management, the Initiative for Rural Emergency Medical Services (IREMS,) and UVM Rescue. It is part of the UVM Office of Emergency Management's continuing mission to create the safest environment possible for all those who utilize university facilities and services.
