Vermont Business Magazine As Montpelier's first Vermont certified "Green Restaurant," the Wayside Restaurant continues to expand on its earth-friendly initiatives. In addition to its 6 rooftop solar hot water panels they are now enjoying the benefits of a 2,160 panel ground-mounted array.
Working with Norwich Solar, the Wayside is now partnered with 5 other businesses and towns in a 500kW Community Solar array located in Perkinsville, Vermont (Town of Weathersfield, Windsor County). The bifacial solar panels are state-of-the-art. In addition to collecting sunlight on the front of the panel, the backside collects light as well. These panels work double-duty in the winter collecting reflected light off the snow-covered ground.
The Wayside Restaurant is a customer of Green Mountain Power, utilizing electricity from 6am to 9:30pm, 7 days a week. Through net metering credits, the power generated by this solar array throughout the year, will help reduce the Wayside's very large electric bill.
Solar is a readily available source of clean renewable electricity. The solar field is estimated to produce – 1,000,000 kWh annually. which is enough to power 138 homes for a full year. In terms of carbon emission reduction, the array reduces 781 tons of carbon dioxide annually; roughly the equivalent of the carbon captured by 839 acres of forest in a full year.
