Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways throughout Vermont for the week of October 24, 2022. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Richmond – A culvert repair project is underway. Motorists will encounter a mile-long lane closure in both directions just south of Exit 11 as southbound traffic is merged to the northbound lane using a crossover. A “zipper merge” traffic pattern is in place. Crews have begun building the culvert stream bed to get the stream flowing into the new concrete box culvert and will soon begin backfilling. Work hours are 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday; Sunday daytime.
I-89 Sharon – A bridge rehabilitation project at Exit 2 on I-89 has been completed. All lane restrictions and speed reductions along the Northbound and Southbound lanes have been removed.
I-91 Bradford – A single-lane closure remains in place in the southbound lanes near Exit 16 for ongoing bridge maintenance. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph remains in effect.
I-91 Fairlee – St. Johnsbury – Multiple work zones are in place for preventative maintenance repairs to bridges along the interstate. Single-lane closures have been established in both directions. Speed limit and lane-width reductions remain in effect.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton – Travelers can expect uneven lanes, grooved pavement, and daily lane closures in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Saturday during daytime construction hours (6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Rockingham – A ledge stabilization project is wrapping up. The crossovers are scheduled to be closed on Saturday 10/22. Traffic flow will then return to the southbound travel lane. The southbound passing lane will be closed for the next few weeks while the temporary crossovers are removed.
I-91 Weathersfield – A bridge deck replacement project at Exit 8 on I-91 has been completed. All lane restrictions and speed reductions along the Northbound and Southbound lanes have been removed. No traffic impacts on VT 131.
I-91 Westminster - A bridge deck replacement project on Interstate 91 over VT 121 is underway. I-91 Northbound and Southbound have been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges, and an alternating one-way traffic pattern is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. Motorists: be aware of a work zone speed reduction on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.
Around the State
Alburgh - A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. Flagged traffic may be in effect intermittently. Minimal delays anticipated.
Andover: Bridge #9 over Trout Brook on Weston-Andover Road is closed through fall. A town-signed 6.4-mile detour route from Weston-Andover Road to Middletown Road, then VT 11 to Hilltop Road and back to Weston-Andover Road is in place.
Brattleboro-Newfane - A roadway project is underway along VT 30 from Cedar Street in Brattleboro to Newfane. A two-lane traffic shift is in place in Dummerston in the vicinity of ledge operations. An alternating one-way traffic pattern will be in effect throughout the project area in various locations. Delays may occur.
Burlington - A paving project is nearing completion along U.S. 2/Main Street from South Willard St. to I-89, Riverside Ave. and along North Willard Street to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during night time operations.
Burlington, Shelburne Street Roundabout – U.S. 7/Shelburne St. is restricted to one-way southbound between South Willard St. and Marian St. South Willard St. is also restricted to one-way northbound between Shelburne St. and Chittenden Dr., and access to Locust St. via Shelburne St. will remain closed. Ledge Rd. will be restricted to right out only onto South Willard St. These traffic patterns will remain in place 24/7 until the roundabout is open to traffic. Motorists are encouraged to follow the signed detour route to avoid delays. Through trucks are required to follow the signed detour route. Night work is anticipated to begin Sunday at 6 p.m. and continue through the week to facilitate milling, paving, and line striping activities. Traffic will be restricted to local traffic only throughout the project area.
Charlotte – So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Charlotte to Shelburne. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations. Delays should be expected, particularly in the evening hours.
Chelsea – Thetford – A resurfacing project continues on VT 113. There will be a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic as crews finish installing plug joints and continue punch list work.
Chester – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on VT 103 just south of Smokeshire Rd. Speed and lane-width reductions are in effect throughout the project area. VT 103 Bridge #16 is closed through October 2022. Traffic is being maintained on a temporary bridge.
Essex – Colchester – On VT-289 two-way traffic will be maintained with lane shifts Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as crews work on final paving. Minor delays anticipated. On VT 2A motorists should expect traffic control with one lane of alternating traffic Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for driveway and side road paving tie-ins.
Hardwick – A paving project continues on VT 14 and VT 15. Motorists should expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic along both routes between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Ludlow – The VT 103 (Main Street) Bridge No. 26 over Jewell Brook is open to two-way traffic but sidewalks remain closed to pedestrian traffic. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic periodically as crews work on bridge railings.
Montpelier – As crews continue to work on the new rail crossing, motorists should expect some alternating one-way traffic using flaggers along U.S. 2 between Gallison Hill Rd. and the traffic circle as crews finish line striping and install the asphaltic joints on each side of the crossing.
Montpelier – Berlin – The new bridge along U.S 2 at the Montpelier-Berlin town line is open to traffic. The contractor will continue to remove the material from the temporary roadway, install asphaltic joints, and do landscaping. This work will result in alternating one-way traffic using flaggers.
Montgomery – A set of bridge deck replacements continues along VT 118. Motorists will encounter one-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and temporary traffic signals during off-hours between West Hill Rd. and Bank St.
Newfane – The Depot Road arch bridge over Rock River will be closed through the fall while the bridge is replaced. Traffic will be rerouted from the north via Grimes Hill Road and from the south via VT-30. Through traffic is not permitted. Grimes Hill Road and Dover Road (at the intersection with Depot Road) are reduced to one-lane traffic with flaggers (daytime hours) and signals (overnight and when no work is ongoing). Motorists should expect roadway excavation and placement of subbase material at Dover Road/ Grimes Hill Road within this one-lane operation.
North Hero – Grand Isle – Drawbridge construction continues along U.S. 2. A speed reduction remains in place. Mariners: The seasonal operating schedule for the drawbridge is in effect.
Pittsford – Brandon – A paving project is finishing up on U.S. 7 where one-way alternating traffic patterns will be implemented as needed around work zones.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is underway at the intersection of Thrall Rd. and River St. approximately 1.37 miles from the intersection of VT 30 and Thrall Rd. A yielding, single lane detour is in place at the entrance to River St. to accommodate construction equipment. Residents are advised to use caution in this area.
Richford – A bridge replacement project continues along VT 105 approximately one mile south of the intersection of Main St. and River St. Motorists may encounter flaggers letting construction vehicles in and out of the work zone.
Richmond – Bolton – A rehabilitation project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists will encounter areas of one-way alternating traffic Monday through Friday during the daytime from Bridge Street/Jericho Road intersection to the east end of the project in Bolton.
South Hero – An intersection improvement project is underway at U.S. 2 and VT 314. Work will be completed off the roadway with minimal if any impacts to traffic.
Stockbridge – Rochester – A resurfacing project continues along VT 100 starting near its intersection with VT 107. Motorists should expect areas of one-way alternating traffic and some delays.
Williston - Motorists can anticipate daytime lane shifts and traffic control on both U.S. 2 and Industrial Avenue allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas.
Construction of a new park and ride facility along VT 2A is underway. Expect a lane closure in the northbound lane Thursday and Friday for tree cutting operations. Alternating traffic will be in effect and minor delays may occur.
Motorists can expect a lane closure in the northbound right lane on VT 2A between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from Hurricane Lane to Taft Corners. Motorists be aware of a new traffic pattern at the intersection with I-89 when traveling south.
Wilmington – Brattleboro – A repaving project continues on VT 9. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 between Wilmington and Brattleboro, as crews continue guardrail work, side road paving, shoulder clean up, and conduct drainage structure adjustments.
Winooski - A roadway project is nearing completion along East Allen St./VT 15. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic during nighttime operations. Minor to no delays expected.
Woodford – A ledge stabilization project is underway on VT 9. Minor traffic holds should be anticipated throughout the week. Eastbound traffic is reduced to one lane. A lane shift for westbound traffic will be in place through November. Motorists are urged to lower speeds when coming down the hill into the project area. A speed reduction to 40 mph is in place.
Woodstock – Hartland – A paving project continues along U.S. 4. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic as crews begin line striping, gutter paving, and shoulder work.
