Vermont Business Magazine David Zuckerman, the former lieutenant governor, won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor on Tuesday. He previously served in that position before running for governor in 2020. On Tuesday he received 44% of the vote to outpace Kitty Toll (39%), Patricia Preston (10%) and Charlie Kimbell (7%).
Zuckerman issued the following statement: “I am honored and humbled to have been chosen by so many of my fellow Vermonters to be the Democratic nominee. I would like to thank my competitors in this race. I enjoyed getting to know them better and appreciate that we were all able to treat each other with respect and dignity.
As we move forward toward the general election, I look forward to continued robust discussions with Vermonters from all over about the future of our state and how we each would work to improve folks day to day situations.
Vermonter's are struggling. Making ends meet has become a major challenge, along with the challenges of finding housing, paying for childcare and healthcare and so many other economic pressures. Small businesses and farms are struggling to survive. Rural Vermont faces many unique problems. The effects of climate change are here now. We feel them on our farms, and in the weather challenges that affect our daily life.
I look forward to putting my experience as a proven legislator, as well as a tried and tested Lt. Governor back to work for you. In this time with so much turnover and such urgent issues, I am ready to work with the Senate leadership to build committees that will work to address the economic, social, and environmental challenges that we face.
Thank you again for putting your faith in me to represent you in the general election. I hope you will join me for these next three months to make sure we win strong on November 8th.”
Kitty Toll issued this statement Tuesday night: “Thank you to our supporters, our donors, our incredible volunteers, and, of course, to our tireless campaign team,” said Toll. “Thank you for every ounce of effort that you put into this campaign to help us get across the finish line. This has been a team effort since day one, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished.
“We must now shift our focus to November. The stakes have never been higher and we must elect democrats up and down the ballot and pass Article 22 with overwhelming approval to ensure reproductive liberty for all Vermonters. I’m committed to this work, and I hope you’ll join me along the way.
"To my supporters, campaign team, and family, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support over the last 6 months. I’m grateful, honored, and humbled.”
Toll entered the race on February 7. She led the Democratic pack of candidates at every single major campaign finance deadline and earned notable endorsements from Governor Madeleine Kunin, Governor Howard Dean, and State Treasurer Beth Pearce.
