The University of Vermont’s College of Education and Social Services (CESS) and the Vermont Agency of Education (AOE) will honor outstanding teachers throughout Vermont and Vermont’s 2022 Teacher of the Year at the 41st Annual Outstanding Teachers’ Day on Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 4:30 pm. The virtual event will be hosted on Microsoft Teams. A live stream of the event will be available on UVM’s Outstanding Teachers’ Day web page.

Hosted by the University of Vermont and Vermont Agency of Education, the event is a culmination of each organization’s longstanding annual ceremonies dedicated to Vermont educators. Vermont Secretary of Education Dan French and CESS Dean Katharine Shepherd will recognize excellence and innovation in teaching throughout all of Vermont’s school districts and supervisory unions; celebrate educators’ powerful impact on children, families, schools, and communities in Vermont; and honor the 2022 Vermont Teacher of the Year and distinguished finalists in the Teacher of the Year competition.

For over 40 years, UVM has annually recognized outstanding teachers throughout the state at a ceremonial event. Traditionally the event has honored educators from each supervisory union or school district, which are invited to nominate an educator at the elementary/middle school level, the secondary level, and the technical center level.

Since 1964, AOE has recognized outstanding Vermont teachers through the Vermont Teacher of the Year award. Vermont 2022 Teacher of the Year Karen McCalla will travel statewide visiting schools and working with teachers. McCalla will also become Vermont’s candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers. Every state’s Teacher of the Year will travel to Washington, D.C., in the spring for the national awards conference, culminating in a reception at the White House.
