Blizzard set to strike eastern New England

AccuWeather Global Weather Center A major East Coast snowstorm is expected to impact portions of the Middle Atlantic coast and Northeast states Friday night through Saturday night, which may deliver well over a foot of snow to parts of the Northeast along with powerful wind gusts and extensive drifting of snow. Only southern and eastern parts of Vermont are expected to be impacted and by lesser amounts of snow from coastal areas.

AccuWeather meteorologists expect the storm to rapidly strengthen off the East Coast on Saturday as it tracks toward the north and northeast.

The highest chance for a major snowstorm with blizzard conditions is expected from eastern Long Island, NY through southern New England and into southern/eastern Maine. In these areas travel may become extremely difficult by Saturday and Saturday night with very low visibility and high snowfall rates. Some roads may be temporarily closed. Some vehicles may become stranded on roadways.

The New York City area will likely be along the edge between lighter snow to the west and heavier snow to the east. Just a slight jog in the storm track could mean a difference between a 3 inch storm and a 12 inch storm.

The city of Boston may see some of the worst of the storm in terms of snow, blowing snow and wind.

Accumulating snow is also expected across parts of North Carolina and Virginia, with several inches possible in the Virginia Beach area.

Arctic air is expected to quickly follow the storm, thus any standing water or slush may rapidly freeze up later in the weekend across the Middle Atlantic and Northeast.

This storm is expected to cause major disruptions to all modes of travel and commerce across the busy I-95 corridor this weekend. Be prepared for widespread cancellations.

Strong winds, especially along the coast may lead to power outages and coastal flooding. Blowing and drifting of snow will continue into early Sunday, which will keep road crews busy as more snow blows back on the roads.
