Vermont Business Magazine Oregon is considered the ‘greenest state’ in America, new research has revealed. Vermont is in fifth and has scored a total Green Score of 30.08. Despite its prominent position in the ranking, the state scores particularly poorly in the ‘Water Quality’ factor, ranking 45th out of 50 for its water.
The study by sleep experts Eachnight examined five factors in each of the 50 states, air quality, water quality, soil quality, motor gasoline consumption in barrel, and renewable energy consumption to establish which one has the best environmental credentials, giving each one a Green Score out of 60.
The study revealed that Oregon is the ‘Greenest State’ in America with a total Green Score of 37.76. The state received the highest score in the ‘Renewable Energy’ factor as it has the highest percentage of renewable energy usage compared to overall energy usage – an impressive 49% of Oregon’s energy is from green sources.
Following in second place for ‘Greenest State’ is Washington, with a total Green Score of 37.09 – just 0.67 less than Oregon’s total. Washington scored the second-highest in the ‘Renewable Energy’ factor with 46% of its total energy usage coming from renewables.
Hawaii has the highest score in America for both ‘Air Quality’ and ‘Water Quality’ which helps it to rank in third place overall. Hawaii’s total Green Score adds up to 36.08 however its use of renewable energy is fairly low, at just 11% of total energy usage.
In fourth is Maine, which has the third-highest percentage of green energy usage – 41% - along with fairly good scores for soil and air quality. The state has a total Green Score of 32.39.
South Dakota in sixth, Montana in seventh, Iowa in eighth, Idaho in ninth, and Alabama in tenth round out the top ten.
At the other end of the scale, Delaware is ranked as the least green state. It has the lowest percentage of its energy usage from renewable sources, with green power accounting for just 2.76% of its total use. As a result, Delaware’s total green score is 15.85.
New Jersey ranks as the second least green state in 49th place, while Utah is in 48th, Louisiana places 47th and Kentucky is 46th.
Jasmin Lee for Eachnight commented on the study:
“It’s fascinating to assess the data on how green each state is and see the considerable variation in factors such as renewable energy usage and gasoline consumption across each state. Oregon tops the list as the greenest state thanks in part to its impressive leadership in the use of renewable energy. Just under half of the state’s power is greenway ahead of the national average of around 15%.”
The study was conducted by Eachnight, which aims to provide the information needed to get better sleep each night, taking a full-circle approach to sleep and wellness that incorporates mental, physical, and environmental well-being.
