Department of Mental Health names Klein new medical director

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Mental Health has named Kelly–Anne Klein, MD, as the new medical director. Klein, a board-certified psychiatrist, comes to the department from Rochester Regional Health in New York where she served as Medical Director.

Before her time in New York, Klein served as the Medical Director of Emergency Psychiatry at the University of Vermont Medical Center for three years. In that role, Klein collaborated extensively with existing systems including the local Community Mental Health Agency, the Vermont Department of Mental Health, and leadership at regional hospitals, including the Brattleboro Retreat.

Additionally, Klein served on the program quality committee at the University of Vermont where she interfaced and collaborated with legislators and community mental health advocates on a regular basis.

Her experience also includes a full-time clinical appointment at the University of Vermont where she provides outpatient, inpatient, and emergency psychiatric services.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome a new Medical Director with a skillset so well suited for our current needs,” said Commissioner Emily Hawes. “Her experience in emergency services and knowledge of Vermont’s mental health systems will provide a valuable perspective as we work to address the challenges in mental healthcare today.”

“As the former medical director of emergency psychiatry at the University of Vermont, I know first-hand the importance of increasing access to mental health care while maintaining and upholding the rights of those in mental health crisis,” said Klein. “I worked with the Department of Mental Health collaboratively in my prior role and have admired the emphasis that they have placed on both of those important goals. It gives me great joy to have this opportunity to ensure that Vermonters are truly represented and supported within our healthcare systems.”

Klein graduated from New York Medical College medical school in 2014.
