Vermont Business Magazine The Task Force on the Implementation of the Pupil Weighting Factors Report will hold its first meeting on June 29, 2021, from 9 am to noon via videoconference.
The Task Force will recommend to the General Assembly an action plan and proposed legislation to ensure that all public school students have equitable access to educational opportunities. The recommendations are due to the General Assembly by December 15, 2021.
The Task Force is composed of eight members, two members each from: Senate Committee on Finance, Senate Committee on Education, House Committee on Ways and Means and House Committee on Education. House members are appointed by the Speaker of the House and Senate members are appointed by the Committee on Committees.

The Task Force was created by Act 59 of 2021 and is composed of the following legislators: Representative Scott Beck, Representative Peter Conlon, Representative Kathleen James, Representative Emilie Kornheiser, Senator Randy Brock, Senator Ruth Hardy, Senator Cheryl Hooker, and Senator Andrew Perchlik.
Hoffman: Student weighting is more complicated than it seems
The proposed changes are an extreme use of weights, and made more so by Vermont’s funding system. Student weighting is just what the term suggests: Certain students who cost more to educate are counted as more than one person—given more weight—as a means to provide the additional funding to their school district.
