Company Shares US Job Creation and Site Investment Plans for 2021
Vermont Business Magazine On Thursday, March 18, Google released their Economic Impact Report, sharing that more than 45,000 businesses, publishers, and nonprofits in Vermont used Google products to increase their online presence and connect with the people and communities they serve -- generating $1.62 billion in economic activity in 2020.
“I believe a lasting economic recovery will come from local communities, and the people and small businesses that give them life,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google and Alphabet. “Google wants to be a part of that recovery. That’s why we plan to invest over $7 billion in offices and data centers across the U.S. and create at least 10,000 new full-time Google jobs in the U.S. this year.”
Google also announced plans to invest more than $7 billion and create at least 10,000 new jobs across the United States this year.

Google is invested in expanding access to Google Career Certificates to help more people—particularly underserved—grow their careers. To date, the Google IT Support Certificate has been implemented through 100+ community colleges nationwide and dozens of career technical education sites. 140+ Vermonters have enrolled in that program. Since 2011, Google for Nonprofits has supported 800+ nonprofits in Vermont. In 2020, Google provided over $2.09M in in-kind search advertising credit to Vermont nonprofits through the Google Ad Grants program.
Jamaica Cottage Shop in South Londonderry was highlighted in Google’s nationwide Economic Impact Report in a case study that details how they used digital tools to increase their online presence and reach customers. Domenic Mangano founded the Jamaica Cottage Shop in 1995 to build rustic post-and-beam structures, including tiny homes, garden sheds, and livestock shelters. Domenic uses digital products, including Google Ads campaigns, to generate leads, land new customers, and grow his business. Domenic’s Google Ads campaigns help reach his audience, while Google Analytics helps him understand their online behaviors, which has been particularly helpful in helping the company continue to grow despite COVID-19’s impact.
“Google lets me utilize the power of the web. Without their innovations, I would not have been able to grow like this,” Domenic says. “We took a hit during the slowdown, but with a skeleton crew, we kept the shop running. More people are working from home and seeking home improvement projects. Searches on barns and chicken coops are up as people look to produce their own food in their backyards.”
With 80 full-time employees, the company has seen 341-percent five-year growth.
Jamaica Cottage Shop is one of many Vermont businesses that used the internet to adapt to new challenges last year. According to a newly released poll conducted by Greenberg, in partnership with the Connected Commerce Council from February 17 to March 11, 2021, 98 percent of U.S. based small business owners say that digital tools have been helpful in running their business, with 80 percent incorporating new digital tools and strategies due to COVID. Looking forward, small business owners remain optimistic about the future of their businesses, with 93 percent believing they will maintain or increase their use of digital tools post pandemic.
