Grants for value added producers available

Vermont Business Magazine Value Added Producer Grants Applications for the US Department of Agriculture’s Value Added Producer Grants are now open. These grants are designed to support agricultural producers in generating new products, improving marketing activities, and increasing overall revenue. Funds can be used for processing, marketing and advertising, and, in a more restricted way, for salary and wages.

There are two grant tracks within the Value Added Producer Grants program:

  1. Working Capital Grant: offers grants up to $250,000 and should be used to directly support the processing and marketing of a value-added product.
  2. Planning Grant: offers up to $75,000 per award to be used for planning activities such as the development of feasibility studies or marketing and business plans related to the processing and marketing of a value-added product.

Independent producers, agricultural producer groups, farmer cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures, are eligible to apply to these opportunities. Successful applicants must provide a match contribution equal to the value of their grant funds. Up to fifty percent of the match can be in the form of in-kind services while the remainder must be cash.
