“We know that we can and must fund Vermont’s future through strategic investments that will help our communities rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic in ways that will make our people healthier, and our communities more equitable and resilient to current and future challenges,” said Lauren Hierl, executive director of Vermont Conservation Voters.
In 2021, the Common Agenda focuses on forward-looking investments and policies that can simultaneously address many of the pressing challenges we face, including these very real, timely needs:
-
Helping people pay less for their transportation, heating, and electricity costs, while creating jobs and addressing the climate crisis
-
Protecting public health by reducing people’s exposure to toxic chemicals, and holding toxic polluters accountable for the harm they cause
-
Advancing environmental justice and equity initiatives
-
Supporting our downtowns and villages, farms and forest lands, and natural areas
-
Supporting policies that foster a healthy democracy
Each year, the Environmental Common Agenda publishes legislative priorities from multiple organizations working at the forefront of Vermont’s environmental and human health, drawing from a vision that includes promoting social, racial, and economic justice, and strengthening our democracy.
Shelden Goodwin, political outreach associate for Vermont Conservation Voters added, “We are pleased that this year we were able to work with a growing list of partners to shape an Agenda that recognizes the need for an equitable and green recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.”
The Environmental Common Agenda is a project of Vermont Conservation Voters, with participation from the following partner organizations: Audubon Vermont; Community Action Works Campaigns; Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC); Conservation Law Foundation (CLF); Lake Champlain Committee (LCC); Preservation Trust of Vermont; Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR); Vermont Chapter of the Sierra Club; Vermont Conservation Voters (VCV); Vermont Interfaith Power & Light (VTIPL); Vermont Natural Resources Council (VNRC); and Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG).
