Vermont Business Magazine Treasurer Mike Pieciak announced today that he will run for a third term as Vermont State Treasurer. Pieciak won his first two terms with over 60% of the vote.
"I ran for office four years ago because I knew that for our state to thrive, we needed to invest in Vermonters directly," Pieciak said. "I'm running for re-election because there is still so much work to be done to grow our economy and lower the cost of living, and my office is prepared to do the work and build a future where hard-working Vermonters can succeed."
He will kick off his campaign Thursday evening at 5:30 pm in his hometown of Brattleboro at the American Legion. He will be joined by Governor Peter Shumlin, Treasurer Beth Pearce, and 2016 Democratic gubernatorial nominee Sue Minter.
Pieciak earned an early endorsement from Congresswoman Becca Balint:
"At a time when Vermonters across the state are feeling the pressure of rising costs, Mike Pieciak has been a steady hand as our Treasurer, remaining laser-focused on fiscal responsibility and building a state economy that is fairer and more inclusive. His work over the past two terms speaks for itself. I’m proud to endorse him and excited for his continued leadership fighting for our working families." Balint said.
Pieciak also received an early endorsement from the Professional Firefighters Association of Vermont.
Treasurer Pieciak listed these as highlights from his first two terms:
-
Prioritizing new housing construction by investing $130 million in low-interest loans to build more than 1,700 units of housing through the ‘10% in Vermont’ program.
-
Proposing and unanimously passing a medical debt relief plan. The program will invest $1 million to eliminate up to $100 million in medical debt for working- and middle-class Vermonters.
-
Passing ArrayRx, a pharmacy discount card deployed in partnership with five other states to deliver lower drug prices for all residents, regardless of their age, income, or insurance status.
-
Passing a pilot of the ‘Baby Bonds’ program to give children born into poverty the resources they need to succeed. This program will serve 450 babies born in Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties between 2027 and 2030.
-
Successfully passing Vermont Saves, a publicly administered retirement savings program that will expand retirement account access to over 80,000 eligible working Vermonters. Today, more than 6,000 Vermonters have collectively saved nearly $8 million dollars through the program.
-
Responding to the July 2023 floods by providing $15 million in flood relief to help rebuild flood-impacted communities.
-
Developing the bi-partisan Climate Resilience Implementation Strategy to adapt to our changing climate, evaluate and address gaps in current services, and identify strategic funding priorities to accelerate implementation.
-
Advocating for fully funding our public pension obligations and fully implementing the pension reform legislation passed in 2022 to ensure dignified retirements for tens of thousands of public sector workers.
-
Establishing a MoneyBack program to directly mail Vermonters over $1.4 million of their own money. Since taking office, Treasurer Pieciak has returned a total of over $23 million in Unclaimed Property to Vermonters.
-
Supporting financial literacy initiatives, including a partnership with the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence to provide financial literacy training and emergency grants to survivors of domestic abuse, and a partnership to offer banking services to incarcerated Vermonters preparing for re-entry.
In his next term, Pieciak plans to stay focused on the kitchen table issues that matter most to Vermont families – building more housing, making healthcare more affordable, and creating more jobs.
"In 2026, Vermont faces real challenges from a cost-of-living crisis, a lack of economic opportunity, and a federal administration that is gutting our state and trampling on our rights," Pieciak said. "Vermonters need to be able to afford to live and thrive here, and they need a Treasurer who is willing to use every tool this office has to make that possible, despite the obstacles laid down by this President."
Treasurer Pieciak also announced the hiring of Jack Pitblado as campaign manager. Pitblado is a resident of Burlington, Vermont and previously worked for the Vermont Democratic Party and later the Vermont Natural Resources Council.
