House passes DMV bill, S.326

Vermont Business Magazine Today, Speaker Jill Krowinski and Representative Matt Walker, Chair, House Committee on Transportation made the following joint statement on S.326, an act relating to miscellaneous amendments to laws relating to motor vehicles:

“The Vermont House of Representatives gave final passage to the annual Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) bill, a commonsense package of reforms that addresses affordability, safety, and accountability for Vermonters. This legislation reflects our commitment to making state government work better for the people it serves, ensuring the DMV operates efficiently, transparently, and with Vermonters' best interests at heart.

“The House Transportation Committee spent months listening to Vermonters, gathering testimony, and crafting legislation that puts affordability, accountability, and safety front and center. We are asking the DMV to update the annual inspection manual to prioritize safety issues and provide relief from minor maintenance requirements. We are tightening accountability on trucks illegally passing through Smugglers' Notch and on snowmobiles using VAST trails without a permit and clarifying the illegality of individuals intentionally altering a Vermont license-plate. Additionally, we are requiring use of a personal flotation device while boating in winter and tightening regulations on motorcycle exhaust systems that affect ambient noise, in an effort to improve the safety and wellness of Vermonters.

"Good government means listening, acting, and delivering. We heard the call from Vermonters for reform, and we answered it. We are proud to have worked together to pass legislation that is practical, responsible, and built for Vermont."
