Families First in Southern Vermont to celebrates one year of service

Expanded Community Support and Impact in Bennington

Vermont Business Magazine Dedicated to supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families, Families First in Southern Vermont will celebrate its first year serving the Bennington County community in May.

So far, FFSV has welcomed 32 people who have benefitted directly from person centered support, adult learning opportunities and coordination to help people with disabilities to find and keep meaningful employment.

Since opening the doors at 160 BenMont Ave. in Bennington last year, FFSV has expanded access to home and community based services designed to help individuals live meaningful, independent and connected lives.

The organization was founded in 1996 by three families seeking better opportunities for their own children. Since then, it has grown immensely,  building on its mission of inclusion, dignity and community engagement.

“We see every day what’s possible when people are given the right support. Young adults finding jobs they’re proud of, individuals building relationships in their communities, and families feeling more secure. That’s the impact we’re working toward in Bennington,” said Executive Director Julie Cunningham.

Through the following services, FFSV helps youth and adults with developmental disabilities build relationships, develop skills and engage fully in their communities. These include:

  • Shared living and home-based support
  • Personal care and respite services
  • Employment services, including job matching and coaching
  • Community inclusion and life skills development
  • Crisis support services
  • DCF youth residential programming
