Vermont startup secures U.S. Utility Patent for circular alternative to single-use gift wrap

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont-based startup Shiki Wrap has secured a U.S. utility patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its reusable gift wrap system — a circular alternative to traditional single-use wrapping paper. Each Shiki Wrap is reversible and stretch-engineered to maintain clean lines without distortion, allowing gifts to be wrapped securely without tape or disposable bows.

The hemless fabric is printed using an eco-conscious process and made from majority recycled materials, designed to endure years of reuse. Founder and CEO Meagan Downey said the milestone reinforces the company’s long-term strategy.

“This patent validates and protects the distinct functionality of our engineered reusable gift wrap system. We’re not simply offering a sustainable substitute for wrapping paper — we’re building defensible circular design within the $20 billion gift wrap market.”

Shiki Wrap was founded in 2021 and has participated in regional accelerator programs including LaunchVT, MassChallenge, and Generator’s JumpStart Program, which connected the company with mentors and advisors during its early development. Meg Hammond, Executive Director of Generator, said:

“Shiki Wrap is exactly the kind of business JumpStart was created to support. Meagan represents what’s possible when a Vermont entrepreneur pairs a strong idea with real determination. Watching her business progress from concept to securing a U.S. utility patent is a great reminder of what's possible when a founder receives the right support at the right time.”

Unlike disposable wrapping paper, Shiki Wrap is designed as a “gift within a gift.” Customers often swap wraps among close family and friends or reuse them across multiple occasions. Beyond gifting, the wraps are commonly repurposed as scarves, tote bags, travel organizers, bottle bags, and storage solutions.

Shiki Wrap products are available online and through select retail and wholesale partners.
