Vermont ranks No. 5 in ratio of EVs to public chargers
Vermont Business Magazine Alliance for Automotive Innovation has released its exclusive state-by-state analysis of the U.S. electric vehicle market for Q1 2026. The Get Connected Electric Vehicle Report summarizes EV sales, purchasing trends and charging infrastructure across the country.
Vermont ranks No. 22 in market share at about 9%. California has the highest share of EVs at nearly 25% with Washington State at nearly 20%. Oklahoma is lowest at about 1%.
EV sales
Nationally: EVs represented 6.3 percent of new light-duty vehicle sales in Q1 2026 – down from 6.5 percent in Q4 2025 and 9.6 percent in Q1 2025.
- 154 EV car, utility vehicle, pickup truck and van models now available for sale in the U.S. in Q4 2025.
Vermont: EVs represented 4.76 percent of new light-duty vehicle sales in Q1 2026 – down from 5.34 percent in Q4 2025 and down from 10.85 percent in Q1 2025.
- 384 EVs sold in Vermont in Q1 2026.
- Vermont ranks No. 22 in EV market share.
Public EV charging
Nationally: In Q1 2026, there were 7.5 million EVs on the road and a total of 242,354 publicly available charging outlets – a ratio of 31 EVs for every public port.
- This includes 70,244 DC Fast chargers, with 3,318 net new chargers added in Q1 2026.
Vermont: At the end of Q1 2026, there were about 19,400 EVs on the road and 1,365 publicly available charging outlets – a ratio of 14 EVs for every public port.
- Includes 282 DC Fast chargers, with 11 net new chargers added in Q1 2026.
