Vermont Business Magazine Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak today announced that Chief of Staff Erin Jacobsen will be departing City Hall following a long-discussed decision to return to the practice of immigration law, where she will focus full time on addressing the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration actions.
“This has been a deeply personal and values-driven decision for Erin,” said Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak. “Immigration justice has always been her passion, and at this moment in our state and country, that work is urgently needed. While she will be dearly missed at City Hall, I fully support her choice and am so grateful that her commitment to our community continues.”
Since the start of Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak's first term, Erin Jacobsen has played an integral role in building the administration and advancing its priorities.
“She has been a wonderful partner and an essential part of our early successes,” the Mayor added. “Our city is stronger because of her leadership, integrity, and heart.”
Jacobsen will remain active in the community as she transitions back to legal advocacy though the recent award of a Private Practice Development Fellowship with Vermont Asylum Assistance Project (VAAP). This fellowship will allow her to become part of VAAP’s team of immigration attorneys while also establishing her private immigration practice. Ms. Jacobsen's last day at City Hall will be on February 6, 2026.
“This was not an easy decision, but at this moment for our country and community, I feel called to return to immigration law,” said Jacobsen. “Working alongside Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak and this incredible administration has been a truly remarkable experience. I am deeply proud of what we’ve built together, and I will truly miss this team. I’m grateful for the Mayor’s leadership and support, and I look forward to continuing to serve our community in this next chapter.”
Kara Alnasrawi, Director of the Burlington Office of Community & Economic Development (CEDO), will take over as Interim Chief of Staff, starting on February 7, 2026. She will serve in this role while a permanent Chief of Staff is selected.
