Vermont Business Magazine Vermont’s forests are shaped by the decisions of private landowners, many of whom care deeply about their woods but feel unsure how to plan for the future or start conversations with family. To help meet that need, Vermont Woodlands Association is offering Taking Stock, an online course designed to help forest landowners gain clarity, confidence, and peace of mind about the long-term stewardship of their land.
Taking Stock is a supportive, small-group course that guides participants through learning about planning options, reflecting on individual and family goals, and identifying practical next steps related to woodland legacy planning. The course is designed for landowners who may not have all the answers, but want a place to start.
“Many landowners tell us they know they should be thinking about the future of their woods, but they’re not sure where to begin,” said Kate Forrer, Executive Director of Vermont Woodlands Association. “Taking Stock offers woodland owners a chance to learn about their options and start conversations in a way that feels manageable and supportive.”
The course includes five live, interactive Zoom sessions, all of which are recorded for participants who cannot attend live. Topics include understanding ownership structures and planning options, navigating family conversations, and clarifying values and goals for the land. Participants also receive a course workbook and have the option to take part in one-on-one coaching sessions with a Vermont-based forest legacy planning specialist.
Taking Stock is open to forest landowners across Vermont and provides educational information about common legal and planning tools. The course does not offer legal advice, but helps participants understand their options and prepare to work with qualified professionals.
Registration for the upcoming session is now open, with limited space available.
