Vermont Business Magazine Ahead of Town Meeting Day, Treasurer Pieciak is returning over $20,000 in unclaimed property belonging to public schools, districts, and supervisory unions across the state.
The Treasurer’s Office is also urging public school administrators to search the State’s unclaimed property database to recoup any forgotten funds before local budgets are voted on next week.
Unclaimed property includes lost checks, forgotten bank accounts, safety deposit boxes, and other financial property. These assets are regularly turned over to the State, and the Treasurer's Office safeguards them until claimed by rightful owners or their heirs.
Unclaimed property can belong to individuals, businesses, nonprofits, government entities, and more. The Treasurer’s Office currently holds over $150 million in unclaimed property.
Treasurer Pieciak emphasized that the returned funds will invest directly in Vermont’s students. “Public schools are stretching every dollar to offer the best education possible to their students,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “While these funds won’t change Vermonters’ tax bills, they will make a real difference in classrooms—helping cover supplies, field trips, and opportunities that enrich kids’ lives.”
Jay Nichols, Executive Director of the Vermont Principals Association, said, “Every dollar returned to Vermont’s public schools supports day-to-day needs that meaningfully improve outcomes for students. I want to thank Treasurer Pieciak for returning these funds, and I encourage my colleagues to search for unclaimed property belonging to their school or district.”
In FY25, the Treasurer's Office returned nearly $10 million to Vermonters across 30,000 individual claims. Both were the most ever returned in a fiscal year. Despite this progress, a record-$24 million in unclaimed property was turned over to the State.
As the total amount of unclaimed property held by the Treasurer's Office continues to rise, Treasurer Pieciak encourages all Vermonters to search for missing money.
