Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of April 27, 2026. Interstates:
Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Work resumes between Exits 8 and 10 to complete the final paving. Motorists should expect minimal delays as crews install construction approach signs. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.
Newbury-Ryegate, I-91 Paving – Milling operations will continue on I-91 North through Exit 17. Temporary single-lane closures will be in place, shifting between the high- and low-speed lanes as work progresses north. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – Work continues on I-89 North and South near Exit 3. There will be daily high-speed lane closures on I-89 South, with the lane closure remaining in place overnight and the speed limit reduced to 55 mph. A permanent high-speed lane closure on I-89 North with temporary concrete barriers is in place, and northbound traffic is restricted to the low-speed lane. The travel lane width on I-89 North is reduced to 15 feet across Bridge 26N, and the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph through the work zone. Traffic on VT 107 will not be affected this week and will remain at a 30 mph speed limit with a 14-foot height restriction under Bridge 26S. Beginning May 1, 2026, (weather permitting), I-89 South traffic will be shifted onto the I-89 North lanes via crossovers, and southbound on-ramp traffic will use a temporary on-ramp with a 55 mph speed limit and a 25 mph advisory speed for a sharp right turn.
State Highways:
Barre-East Montpelier, VT 14 Resurfacing – Milling operations are starting for this paving project on VT 14. Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place beginning near Hope Cemetery and progressing north throughout the week. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should expect delays.
Barre Town, Railroad Crossing Improvements – A railroad crossing improvement project continues on Quarry Hill Road between just north of Fisher Road and just south of Cherrywood Road. Quarry Hill Road is reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Motorists should expect delays.
Bennington, Bridge 6 Replacement (VT 9/Main Street) – VT 9/Main Street is closed between Morgan Street and Beech Street for a full bridge replacement from April 13 through early June. A signed detour is in place. Beech Street and Morgan Street remain closed at their intersections with VT 9/Main Street, with no access to the main roadway. The Buck Stop Mini-Mart, gas station, and TenneyBrook Car Wash remain accessible via Beech Street.
Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction – Crews will construct the splitter islands for the roundabout and work on the sediment basin. College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Ln) remain fully close at VT 67A through June, with traffic maintained via detour routes. Roadway signs direct drivers to continue southbound on VT 67A, onto VT 279 eastbound, onto U.S. 7 northbound and exit at Exit 2 in Bennington. Drivers then turn onto VT 7A southbound, onto Rice Lane, onto Matteson Road. To reach College Drive, drivers continue north on Matteson Road onto Harlan Road onto Jennings Drive and back onto College Drive.
Brattleboro-Putney, U.S. 5 Resurfacing – Milling will continue north on U.S. 5 in Dummerston. Between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. a single-lane closure will be in place and may change throughout the day to a maximum distance of 1.5 miles. Alternating traffic patterns will be controlled by flaggers. This work zone will alternate between the northbound and southbound lanes. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should expect delays.
Colchester, I-89 Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange – Sunday evening through Friday morning, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., crews will install drainage, regrade, and make other improvements along Lower Mountain View Drive, and adjust roadway structures along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive under intermittent lane and shoulder closures. Monday morning through Friday evening, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., crews will set light pole bases, demolish existing traffic signal equipment, and install new signal foundation along U.S. 2/7 between South Park Drive and Mountain View Drive, under intermittent lane closures along U.S. 2/7. Motorists should expect significant delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes.
Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements – During daytime hours, crews will install plug joints on the U.S. 2 bridge and line striping on U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 within the project limits and wrong-way delineators on the ramps at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange. Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 will have intermittent lane closures with traffic shifted as needed. Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., the ramps at the I-89 Exit 17 interchange will have intermittent lane closures and width reductions, as needed.
Derby-Newport, VT 191 Resurfacing – Milling operations are starting for this paving project on VT 191. Single-lane closures will be in place Tuesday through Friday. Alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers and lane shifts will be in place. Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present and may direct traffic in the U.S. 5 intersection as needed. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
Elmore, Bridge #90 Replacement – Construction of the temporary roadway and bridge continues. Traffic on VT 12 in the project area will be reduced to one lane with flaggers from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. At all other times, a temporary traffic signal will guide traffic on the one-lane road.
Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge.
Milton, U.S. 7 Intersection Reconfiguration – Work will include preparation for the Keelty crossing and material stockpiling. Traffic impacts will remain minimal, with occasional shoulder closures for construction access. Crews and equipment may be present near the roadway, with signage in place to guide motorists.
Pittsford, Bridge Replacement, U.S. 7 – For this bridge replacement project, motorists can expect a lane closure on U.S. 7 to allow for truck traffic in and out of the work area.
Poultney, Bridge #4 Rehabilitation – Work will include installation of steel shoring for the existing bridge. Traffic has fully shifted to the one-lane temporary bridge, which is now open to truck traffic. Traffic is controlled by temporary signals, with flaggers used as needed. Motorists should proceed with caution through the work zone.
Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, crews will continue work on the abutment formwork, reinforcing steel, and pier foundation for the new bridge. The temporary bridge continues to carry travelers over the river.
Troy, VT 243 Resurfacing – Milling operations are starting for this paving project on VT 243. Single-lane closures with alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place on Monday from just south of the Canadian border to the intersection with Dominion Avenue. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – During the daytime hours, crews will continue roadway widening and underdrain installation along the west side of VT 2A, and installing sewer along Hillside Drive and the east side of VT 2A. Weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., VT 2A may be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic between Mountain View Road/Industrial Avenue and Bittersweet Circle. Weekdays between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hillside Drive will be restricted to one-way alternating and the southbound right turn lane from VT 2A onto Industrial Avenue will be closed.
Wolcott, Bridge #6 Replacement – Bridge #6 on School St remains closed to all traffic. A signed detour is in place to guide motorists to access School Street via Flat Iron Road and VT 15. Motorists can expect intermittent alternating one way traffic.
Worcester Bridge #89 Replacement – Crews will be installing construction approach signs on VT 12 in the project area. Flaggers will be in place to facilitate alternating one lane traffic through the work zone between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
