Pieciak promotes ABLE accounts during ABLE to Save Month

The program offers life-changing financial benefits to Vermonters with qualifying disabilities and their families

Vermont Business Magazine Treasurer Pieciak is joining state fiscal officers in recognizing #ABLEtoSave Month this April. The outreach campaign promotes Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts and the life-changing financial benefits they offer to individuals with qualifying disabilities and their families.

ABLE accounts allow eligible individuals with disabilities and their families to save and invest for qualified disability-related expenses, including housing, education, transportation, and healthcare—all without jeopardizing eligibility for public benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.

Account holders can save up to $20,000 per year—and, if employed, contribute an additional $15,650. SSI benefits are not affected if the account balance remains below $100,000. Other federally means‑tested benefits are not impacted regardless of amount saved.

In Vermont, the ABLE program is administered through the State Treasurer’s Office. While over one thousand ABLE accounts have been opened in Vermont, Treasurer Pieciak says many more Vermonters are eligible to take advantage of the program.

“For Vermonters with disabilities and their loved ones, ABLE accounts offer a path to greater financial security, peace of mind, and a more affordable future,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “We'll continue promoting ABLE to ensure more qualifying Vermonters can build savings, plan ahead, and afford their basic needs, without risking benefits they rely on.”

Thousands more Vermonters recently became eligible to open an ABLE account under the ABLE Age Adjustment Act. The act raises the age requirement of disability onset from 26 to 46, opening the door for those who were previously excluded from the program to participate, including veterans and individuals who acquired disabilities later in life from illness, injury, or accident. The expansion has already accelerated program participation.

The ABLE National Resource Center is hosting a free webinar on Tuesday, April 21 at 12 PM ET for individuals and families who are newly exploring ABLE accounts. The discussion will also offer guidance to savers on account management, contributions, investment options, qualified expenses, and long-term savings strategies. Registration is available here
