Vermont Business Magazine Norwich University announces that its undergraduate certificate in Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) has been awarded full accreditation by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). The program has been accredited for a five-year term, effective through August 26, 2030.
The USGIF review committee commended Norwich on the quality of its program and leadership, noting: “The review committee was highly impressed with the quality of the program and its leadership. We would like to congratulate you and your team again for your accomplishment and welcome you to join USGIF’s Collegiate Accredited Schools.”
“I’ve been using and abusing geospatial intelligence ever since we had the tools and toys necessary to make it work,” said Bruce Dobbins, retired naval intelligence officer, adjunct professor in the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology, and geospatial intelligence coordinator at the Peace and War Center. “Have you used GPS recently? Congratulations, you were using geospatial intelligence.”
The GEOINT certificate is designed to complement any undergraduate major and prepare students with skills in geographic information systems, data analysis, and spatial problem solving. Dr. Laurie Grigg, chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, emphasized its versatility: “One of the things I always tell students is that you may not have heard of GIS [geographic information systems] but I guarantee your future employer has. This brings us up to date in a way that is uniquely Norwich, that really fits us.”
Dr. Travis Morris, director of the John and Mary Frances Peace and War Center, noted the program’s career value: “Unique combinations in the right domain mean that you’re a wanted resource. When you put that person together, you can have a crime analyst that’s focused on animal poaching, predation, and trafficking. That person is going to be employed.”
With this accreditation, Norwich joins USGIF’s Collegiate Accredited Schools, connecting students to professional networks, scholarships, and research opportunities in a rapidly growing global field.
