AOT Road Construction Report for the week of September 22

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it. 

Interstates:  

Colchester, I-89 Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange – Crews will continue with drainage work throughout the night and day, and clearing activities in preparation for drilling and blasting anticipated to start in early October. Sunday through Friday, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., U.S. 2/7 near Whitcomb Street will be under lane reductions and shifts. Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., U.S. 2/7 between Lower Mountain View and the Interstate 89 southbound ramps will be under lane closures. Motorists should expect significant delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes. 

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements – Crews will pave the Exit 17 northbound deceleration lane and I-89 northbound and southbound near Exit 17, install traffic signals on U.S. 2, and excavate along U.S. 7. From Monday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on I-89 southbound. U.S. 2, between U.S. 7 and Jasper Mine Road, will experience intermittent daytime lane closures and brief periods of alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers of less than 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. U.S. 7, between Shell Gas Station/Simon’s Chimney Corner Store and Wiley Road will have instances of traffic shifts.

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. Traffic on I-91 remains reduced to a single lane in each direction about a quarter mile before the Exit 15 interchange. A crossover that diverts southbound vehicles onto the northbound bridge around the work zone is active with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph.  

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – I-91 South at Exit 16 is open to one lane of travel within the project area. A work zone speed reduction to 55 mph is in effect. Fines are increased for speeding within the work zone. Rolling roadblocks in the northbound lanes are possible but not anticipated.  

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Crews continue with daytime shoulder and guardrail along with milling in paving in various areas. Monday 5:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. there will be milling and paving at the Exit 8 acceleration lanes. Motorists should expect delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits, and fines will be doubled. 

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. Speed limits are reduced to 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. Trucks will frequently enter and exit the construction zone, and flaggers will be present to slow traffic on the Exit 3 off-ramp and stop traffic on the Exit 3 on-ramp. VT 107 has been reduced to 30 mph speed limit and a 14-foot height restriction.

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving – Finish work on shoulders, bridge joints, and line striping continues on the I-89 paving project between Exit 20 and the Canadian border. Temporary speed limit reductions to 55 mph will be in place across multiple daily single-lane work zones.

State Highways:  

Barre Town–Orange–Topsham, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Expect single-lane closures with alternating traffic along the project corridor. Moderate delays may occur during daytime work as crews complete shoulder gravel, driveway aprons, and main line striping.  

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Main Street and Beech Street. Utility crews will be working within the roadway limits during both daytime and overnight hours.      

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews will install curb, sidewalk, and streetlights along the north side of VT 67A and roadway approaches for College Drive and Matteson Road. From Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with intermittent stoppages for construction vehicles. College Drive and Matteson Road are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes until mid-October. 

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project continues with paving, sidewalk, and utility structure work on U.S. 5 (Main Street), VT 30 (Linden Street), VT 9 (Western Avenue and High Street), and VT 142 (Vernon Street). Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Saturday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through multiple work zones. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours. Pedestrians should be vigilant for sidewalk detours. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures.  

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will conduct concrete sidewalk work on VT 15 in the Village of Johnson and clean drainage pipes on VT 15 in Johnson and Cambridge. Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 between VT 100C in Johnson and the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge. Crews will be off the roadway from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on VT 15 in the Village of Johnson.  

Elmore, VT 12 Bridge Replacement – Crews will do tree work throughout the project area in preparation for construction. From 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic over the bridge located over an unnamed brook on VT 12 near the North Branch Cascades Trail. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the project area. 

Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk Project – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., crews could be present on site a few days during the week. VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for cleanup work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.  

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.    

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between the Hinesburg/St. George line and Tilley Drive continues with traffic control present Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas. Motorists should expect delays.    

Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – Alternating one-lane traffic may occur during work hours as crews complete final tasks.   

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., crews are expected to be on-site a few days for project clean-up. There will be little to no impact on vehicular or pedestrian traffic. VT 15 will be two lanes for most of the week, with potential brief lane closures. Work is between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive and VT 15 and Park Street.

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing – Single-lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for daytime driveway apron paving and clean-up operations on this Class 1 paving project. Flaggers will control one-way alternating traffic patterns through the work zones. 

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control present on Monday allowing for one lane of alternating travel, motorists should expect delays. Tuesday through Friday traffic control will be present to all for construction vehicles in and out of the work area along with lane shifts on U.S. 7. 

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, crews will finish assembling the 360-foot-long temporary bridge adjacent to Depot Street. Depot Street will be one lane controlled by flaggers on Monday and Tuesday.  Depot Street will be closed for short durations while launching the bridge.     

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – Bridge deck work continues. A one-lane alternating traffic pattern will be in effect for the next several weeks. The roadway width has been reduced to 10 feet wide. Minor to no delays expected. 

Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Crews will excavate the temporary road and stream. On Friday 9/26, crews will install permanent line striping and rumble strips. Flaggers will manage one-lane alternating traffic when work is in the roadway.   

Swanton-Highgate, VT 78 Stormwater Improvement  Culvert cleaning will resume on Wednesday.  One-lane alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be present on VT 78 between Lafar St and Missisquoi St/Robin Hood Dr.  

Washington, VT 110 Bridge #15 Replacement Project  The contractor anticipates finishing channel work and possibly the guardrail work, weather permitting. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts on VT 110 in the town of Washington as the contractor anticipates having alternating one-way traffic patterns controlled by flaggers. Motorists are advised to use extra caution as the bridge is not paved and vehicles will be traveling on a gravel surface.  

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – Bridge work will continue as crews install granite curb throughout the project area. Motorists should expect lane and shoulder closures on VT 100 northbound between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorists should anticipate delays along VT 100 in Waterbury and at the intersection of Stowe Street. Flaggers and a Uniformed Traffic Officer will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will conduct traffic signal work at the VT 2A and Industrial Avenue intersection and water service work on VT 2A between Industrial Avenue and Hillside Drive. From Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., turning lanes on VT 2A at the intersection with Industrial Avenue/Mountain View Road may be closed. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on VT 2A between Industrial Avenue and Hillside Drive, including the VT 2A and Industrial Avenue intersection. Early next week, traffic signal mast arm installation will require full traffic stops of less than 30 minutes on VT 2A. Motorists should expect significant delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes.  

Woodstock, FAS Route 166/Pomfret Road, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – Line striping will take place throughout week, marking the final task of the project. The road will reopen to two-lane traffic each day, with minimal delays expected.  

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement  Culvert work continues as crews make the final concrete placement for the four wingwalls. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.  

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement  Culvert work continues as crews install the final course of pavement. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on VT 12 over the new box culvert over Hardwood Brook. Flaggers may be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours. During non-working hours, the roadway is open to two lanes of traffic through the work zone. Motorists are asked to use caution while traveling through the work zone as surface conditions may change.
