Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Studio Center (VSC) invites the community to celebrate the re-opening of Corner House during September’s Experience VSC. Corner House has been under construction throughout 2024 and 2025. The renovation and addition to the historic home will provide additional lodging for artists and writers in residence at VSC. The ribbon cutting will be held on Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m. followed by open studios, music from Los Lorcas, and refreshments through 4 p.m.
Corner House will provide lodging for up to 13 Vermont Studio Center artists and writers, continuing its legacy of community and creativity. From 1930 to 1947, the property served as housing for female students at the Johnson Normal School (now the VSC Barbara White Studios on Main Street).
The home was also used as a dormitory by Johnson State College (now Vermont State University, Johnson Campus). Over the years, ownership of the home changed hands multiple times before Vermont Studio Center purchased it in 2007, making it a critical part of the nonprofit organization’s programming to serve artists and writers from around the world.
“It is incredibly important to us to care for the historic buildings on our campus,” shared Hope Sullivan, Executive Director at Vermont Studio Center. “The renovation of this distinctive home is vital to our programming, allowing us to increase our cohort numbers for each residency session and ensure the comfort of our artist and writers in residence. We are incredibly grateful to the donors that made it possible.”
The renovation of Corner House was made possible with generous support from Deborah Clearman, Susie and Ted Cronin, Marin Community Foundation, National Philanthropic Trust, The Philip Guston Foundation, River Branch Foundation, Trout Lily Foundation, and Vermont Community Recovery and Revitalization Program.
The Corner House project is a part of Vermont Studio Center’s long-term campus plan, which improves health standards and accessibility, supports historic preservation, enhances VSC’s resilience, and prepares the organization for future success. It is also part of the greater recovery effort at VSC to address impacts from the historic 2023 flood. The re-opening of Corner House will allow VSC to increase residency cohort numbers from 30 to 40, returning the residency program to its ideal size. With Corner House online, VSC will bring more than 600 residents to Johnson each year, supporting the cultural vibrancy and economic resiliency of the Vermont village.
The Corner House ribbon cutting is part of an ongoing series of events, Experience VSC. Every third Sunday of the month from June to October, VSC welcomes guests for open studios, campus tours, music, refreshments, and special guests. The September 21 event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. Visit vermontstudiocenter.org to learn more.
###
Founded in 1984, Vermont Studio Center (VSC) welcomes artists and writers for two-to-four-week studio residencies in an inclusive, international community, honoring creative work as the communication of spirit through form. Our buildings, many of them historic Vermont landmarks, overlook the Gihon River in the northern Green Mountains.
VSC offers residents and the public an opportunity to engage with global creative communities. We invite Visiting Writers and Artists from around the world to join us during our residencies to mentor residents, present readings, facilitate craft talks, and give lectures that are open to the public. Starting in 2020, VSC opened its doors to the regional art community to offer studio space to area artists and writers at a deeply discounted rate through the Studios at VSC program.
