Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Labor, in partnership with the Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center (VMEC), is proud to announce Vermont Aerospace Industries’ and Weidmann Electrical Technology’s launch of Registered Apprenticeship programs that combine paid on-the-job training with technical instruction and support from experienced mentors. These programs aid in developing a skilled workforce, allowing Vermonter’s located in the Northeast Kingdom to earn a well-paying salary while they grow their skill set.
“Registered Apprenticeships offer a proven pathway for Vermonters to earn while they learn, providing structured mentorship, technical instruction, and on-the-job experience,” said Jay Ramsey, Director of Workforce Development. “Employers are turning to Registered Apprenticeship as a way of opening doors to good jobs, strong wages, and clear career advancement pathways.”
Vermont Aerospace Industries, based in Lyndonville, launched its CNC Operator – Milling and Turning apprenticeship in July, welcoming six apprentices in its first cohort. The program combines on-the-job training with technical instruction and was developed with support from VMEC, while VDOL assisted with recruitment. “I’m so excited to see my dream of having local kids aware of opportunities in their backyard come true,” said Peggy Clay of VAI.
Weidmann Electrical Technology in St. Johnsbury has launched a Component Flex Operator apprenticeship. The first cohort of machine operators recently registered and began the program with related technical instruction starting in January through local partner St. Johnsbury Academy Adult Education. In preparation for this new career pathway, Weidmann taught a team of mentors and trainers to support apprentices and all new hires with more effective on-the-job training.
“By developing both apprentices and mentors, these programs are human-centric, effective, and impactful for the whole organization,” said Carla Wuthrich of VMEC.
VDOL and VMEC continue to support manufacturing businesses and workers across the state by expanding apprenticeship opportunities and helping Vermonters build careers in manufacturing while meeting local workforce needs.
