Vermont Business Magazine Saint Michael’s College will host a local author and anthropologist who will illuminate some of the hidden stories of migrant laborers working in the food industry discovered through her research.

Teresa Mares, an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Vermont, will deliver a talk on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, at St. Mike's titled “No Farm [Workers] No Food: How Immigrant Labor Feeds Us All.” The talk, which will be held in the Roy Room of the College’s Dion Family Student Center, begins at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Mares, an expert in migration from Latin America to the U.S. and labor in food systems, recently published her second book, “Will Work for Food: Labor Across the Food Chain.” Her work explores theories and concepts of citizenship and borders, identity and foodways, as well as contemporary social movements. Her talk at Saint Michael’s College will focus on the impact of migrant labor on the U.S. economy, how deeply the food industry depends on immigrants, and the lived experiences of migrant families living in Vermont.

Mares’ talk is being co-sponsored by the College’s Institute for the Environment; Institute for Global Engagement; Center for Diversity, Empowerment and Community; and Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE).

“We are flooded by misinformation around migrant labor in rural America,” said Allison Cleary, a Saint Michael’s College senior lecturer currently co-teaching a course on the migrant journey at the southern U.S. border. “Teresa Mares connects the food on our tables directly to the hidden lives of migrant laborers in Vermont, helping us to understand our interconnections.”
