AOT Road Construction Report, Week of May 19

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of May 19, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.    

Interstates:   

I-89 Colchester  Improvements are underway at the Exit 17 interchange. From Sunday at 8 p.m. through Friday at 6 a.m., there will be single-lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers at the intersection of U.S. 7 and U.S. 2 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night. There is the potential for nighttime closures of the I-89 Exit 17 northbound on and off ramps between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Traffic would be detoured via Exit 18 in Milton. From Monday through Friday at 12 p.m., I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 North and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 South. Width reductions will be in place on the I-89 North on and off ramps, with traffic maintained. U.S. 2 between Chimney Corner and the I-89 South ramps will have lane closures with traffic shifts. Two-way traffic will be maintained. Starting mid-week, shoulders on U.S. 7 near U.S. 2 intersection will be closed intermittently during daytime hours. Crews will be out of the roadway by noon on Friday. 

I-89 Montpelier-Waterbury – This southbound paving project starts at MM 63.00 in Waterbury and goes to MM 52.58 in Montpelier for a total project length of 10.5 miles. Work includes the Exits 8 and 9 on and off ramps Motorists can expect lane closures this week between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. as construction signage is installed. 

I-89 Richmond – Work continues on I-89 in Richmond south of Exit 11 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Motorists will encounter passing lane closures northbound (MM 75.45 to MM 77.0) and southbound (MM 77.29 to MM 75.71). Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled. 

I-89 Royalton – Construction continues Monday through Friday on the I-89 bridges near Exit 3. Construction activities on the roadway will end for the week by noon on Friday. Northbound and southbound traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. VT 107 traffic may be diverted due to bridge work, with a 30 mph speed limit and 14’ height restriction under the bridges.    

I-89 Swanton-Highgate – Temporary passing and travel lane closures will be in place for cold planing operations on I-89 North beginning just north of Exit 21 and ending just south of Exit 22. Lane closures will also be in place on I-89 South between the Carter Hill Road overpass and Exit 21 for work on stormwater improvements. A temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place through the work zones during working hours. Motorcycles should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. 

I-91 Fairlee – Beginning approximately a quarter mile before the I-91 Exit 15 interchange, travel is reduced to a single lane in both directions, and a crossover diverting southbound traffic around a bridge deck replacement project is now active. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place.  

State Highways:  

Barre Town – Milling will continue on U.S. 302 from Orange into Topsham.  Ditching will continue from Barre into Orange. Motorcyclists should use caution on milled surfaces.  There will be multiple single lane closures with alternating one-way traffic.  Expect delays. 

Bennington  A roundabout project will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A at its intersections with Silk Road/Matteson Road from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Crews will be out of the roadway by noon on Friday.  

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Travelers on VT/NH 119 will encounter flaggers and one-way alternating traffic patterns just east of the new bridge over the CT River in New Hampshire. 

Cambridge-Johnson – Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., motorists can expect two traffic control packages facilitating alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 between Park Street in Johnson and the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge. Crews will be out of the roadway by noon on Friday. 

Chelsea-Washington From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., ditching work will continue on VT 110 from the Washington-Chelsea town line, proceeding south. Motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts and minimal delays on VT 110. 

Enosburg Falls – As sidewalk work continues near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street, VT105 will be reduced to one lane Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flaggers and traffic control signage to manage traffic flow. 

Elmore From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on VT 12, Camp Road, and Boat Launch Road. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Fairfax – Motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic on VT 128 Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting in Fairfax and moving south towards Essex. On Friday, work for this week will end at noon. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zones. Motorcyclists are advised to exercise caution due to the grooved pavement surface. 

Fairlee – Traffic on Lake Morey Road at Exit 15 will be reduced to one-way alternating patterns controlled by flaggers while crews work on the I-91 bridge overhead. Motorists should expect shifting traffic patterns in this area. 

Hartford Motorists should anticipate minor impacts and alternating one-way traffic on the Maple Street/VT 14 side of Old Bridge #7.   

Hinesburg-South Burlington – A resurfacing project begins on VT 116 from the U.S. 2 intersection proceeding 8 miles to the Hinesburg/St. George Town line. Milling operations will take place Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. beginning at the U.S. 2 intersection proceeding south. 

Ludlow  Night work is scheduled for Sunday and Monday nights from8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews finish paving VT 103 between the fire station and the intersection with Elm Street. Flaggers and single-lane closures will be in place. During the day from Monday through Friday, single-lane closures with one-way alternating traffic patterns will be in place on VT 100S and on VT 103. Wednesday through Friday during the day, flaggers will control traffic at all side street intersections with VT 103 between Elm Street and Mountain Road. Expect delays throughout the project limits. 

Marshfield-Danville From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor delays and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 in Cabot near Danville Hill Road to the intersection with VT 15 in West Danville. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. traffic control may be present on U.S. 7 to allow for construction vehicles in and out of the work area.   

Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound lane closure and one-way alternating traffic, controlled by a traffic signal, will continue until mid-season when the closure will switch sides to the westbound lane. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.       

Readsboro – On VT 100 over Deerfield River, crews will continue work on the piling for the temporary roadway on the western side of the project and the excavation for piers on the eastern side of the river. One travel lane will be closed with flaggers on-site to manage traffic flow. The parking area adjacent to the gazebo is closed for material storage.  

Richmond – Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., U.S. 2 will have traffic control present allowing for alternate one-way traffic with minimal traffic interruptions.   

Searsburg On VT 9 approximately 1.1 miles west of the intersection with VT 8, workers are replacing a culvert with a bridge. A temporary roadway with a maximum lane width of 12.5 feet (total 25 feet maximum between concrete barriers) is in place. Traffic speeds are reduced to 30 mph through the work zone. Traffic enforcement will be present at times. Delays are expected. 

Sheldon –Motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic on VT 105 Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. starting in Sheldon and moving east to Enosburg. On Friday, work for this week will end at noon. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zones. Motorcyclists are advised to exercise caution due to the grooved pavement surface.   

Williston The VT Route 2A culvert replacement project resumes with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. with traffic control present Sunday through Friday morning. 

Williston – A roadway resurfacing and widening project will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on Industrial Avenue Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the closure of the VT 2A southbound right-turn-only lane at Industrial Ave from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should expect significant traffic delays on weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes. Crews will be out of the roadway by noon on Friday. 

Worcester – From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area. 

Worcester – From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on Bridge #87 on VT 12 over Hardwood Brook. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.
