Vermont Business Magazine Each year in May, the University of Vermont hosts the Spring Move Out Project (SMOP) in collaboration with the City of Burlington, local organizations, and Champlain College to make student move out easier for everyone.

Moving out? Bring reusable items to the Spring Move Out Project (SMOP) Events on May 15 and May 22.

Event Info

  • May 15, 2025 Lower Loomis Street, 11 am to 2 pm

  • May 22, 2025 Lower Buell Street, 11 am to 2 pm

Whether you're moving out or you just want a little more elbow room, the 25th Annual Spring Move Out Project is the time and the place for unloading unwanted (but still usable) household goods. Students bring clothing, books, household items, furniture, and non-perishable food items down to this annual community swap. Leftovers will be donated to local charities and reuse stores.

For a fee ranging from $5-$30, unusable furniture and other items too far gone for swapping will be accepted at trash compacters located on both streets. These compacters will be available only during the event. Items banned from the landfill but not accepted at SMOP, such as electronics, scrap-metal items, tires, large appliances, etc., will be accepted at Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) Drop-Off Centers. Fees apply to some items.

This popular street swap encourages reuse, recycling and overall better management of unwanted items resulting during student move out times.  It is the culmination of an effort, which includes the attached 7 Tips Flier that is delivered door-to-door in Burlington hill neighborhoods, to make moving out easier and cleaner for students and neighbors.

SMOP partners include: CSWD, City of Burlington Permitting and Inspections, University of Vermont Office of Student and Community Relations, Champlain College, ReSOURCE, Burlington neighborhood groups and landlords, Casella Waste Systems, and Sleep Well Recycling.

For more information and additional tips for moving out, see the UVM Office of Student and Community Relations’ SMOP webpage here.
