Vermont House affirms transgender rights

Vermont Business Magazine Today, the Vermont House of Representatives voted to adopt J.R.S. 15, supporting Vermont’s transgender and non-binary community and declaring Vermont’s commitment to fighting discrimination and treating all citizens with respect and dignity.

"Vermont has long stood for equality, dignity, and human rights," said Vermont Speaker of the House, Rep. Jill Krowinski. "In a moment when many states are targeting LGBTQ+ communities with dangerous legislation, Vermont is choosing to stand up — clearly and unequivocally — in support of our transgender and non-binary neighbors. You belong here."

The resolution highlights the vital contributions of LGBTQ+ Vermonters to the state’s culture, economy, and communities, while acknowledging the harmful effects of discrimination, stigma, and violence that persist across the country.

J.R.S. 15 commits Vermont lawmakers to advancing policies that protect civil rights, promote equity in access to health care and education, and ensure the full participation of all people in public life.

“J.R.S. 15 is not only a resolution but a reaffirmation,” said Rep. Karen Dolan, D-Essex Jct. “A reaffirmation that we will not waver in our defense of equity. And a declaration that we will keep fighting to ensure every Vermonter, regardless of gender identity, is treated with the respect and humanity they deserve.”

The resolution now moves to the Vermont Senate for final adoption.
