Vermont Construction Academy launches first Carpentry Boot Camp in Winooski

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Construction Academy (VCA) officially launched its first Carpentry Boot Camp in July at its new training facility in Winooski. Led by Academy Manager and Instructor Ross Lavoie, the 25-day program offers hands-on training for students ages 17 and older who are ready to gain real-world skills and explore a future in the trades.

This boot camp is the first of two 25-day programs planned for this year. Students not only gain essential carpentry experience but also earn valuable industry-recognized credentials.

Graduates of the program will complete OSHA 10 and Lead RRP certifications and have the opportunity to earn NCCER Core credentials—foundational for careers in construction.

VCA student Christian Mitchell, 18, a recent graduate of Milton High School, joined the program to build a foundation for his future career in plumbing.

“I think everyone should know about this academy—it’s great for everyone,” Mitchell shared. “I’ve never used any kind of saws or PPE before, but the environment here is so supportive. Everyone comes in with different perspectives, and we all have the same goal: to learn and grow. It’s helping me build social skills and confidence while we work together on our first project.” Mitchell discovered the academy through his high school career counselor and said the teamwork and camaraderie have been just as important as the technical training.

"The energy these students bring is incredible. Many are just beginning to explore what a career in the trades can look like, and our goal is to give them the confidence, skills, and connections to move forward," said Ross Lavoie, Academy Manager and Carpentry Instructor. "From learning to use tools safely to working as a team, they’re already showing up with commitment and curiosity—and that’s exactly what this industry needs."

The Carpentry Boot Camp is just one part of VCA’s broader effort to strengthen Vermont’s construction workforce. In addition to registered apprenticeships and short-term training programs, VCA also has the ability to deliver custom training and curriculum to meet the growing needs of the construction industry.
