AOT Road Construction Report for the week of July 21

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 21, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.

Interstates:

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements  Crews continue work on the new U.S. 2 bridge over I-89 at Exit 17 and install guardrail, a roadway island, and mast arm foundations on U.S. 7. From Monday through Friday, I-89 near Exit 17 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions during off-peak hours: between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. for I-89 northbound and between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. for I-89 southbound. U.S. 2 between Jasper Mine Road and Chimney Corner and U.S. 7 between the Shell gas station and Wiley Road will have lane shifts and shoulder closures, with two-way traffic maintained.   

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. A temporary crossover is in effect. Beginning approximately a quarter mile in advance of the Exit 15 interchange, traffic is reduced to a single lane in both directions and being diverted onto I-91 North. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect. Lake Morey Road under the work zone will be subject to alternating single-lane closures with traffic controlled by flaggers.  

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – Clearing of the ledge face and installation of safety measures are being implemented within the project area. Traffic is reduced to a single lane between Exits 16 and 15. A speed reduction is in place. Both southbound lanes of I-91 will be fully closed beginning Saturday 7/26. Southbound traffic will be detoured to U.S. 5 from Exit 16 to Exit 15.  

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – In preparation for new pavement, crews are removing existing surface pavement and paving two separate courses of pavement. Motorists should expect major delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 9 to Exit 8. Motorists should also expect uneven lanes and a milled surface in the travel lane. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.   

Richmond I-89, Work Associated with the U.S. 2 Bridge Project – Crews will continue to clean up material on I-89 in Richmond south of Exit 11 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of the recent completion of the U.S. 2 bridge replacement project. Motorists will encounter passing lane closures northbound and southbound.  

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit on VT 107 is reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction. 

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving and stormwater improvement projects continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.     

State Highways:  

Barre Town-Orange, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Guardrail and sign installation, and ditching will continue from Orange to Topsham, and curb work will be completed around the East Barre roundabout. Motorists should expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic, minor delays, and changing traffic patterns at the roundabout to navigate work zones.  

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Crews will install erosion control measures and perform utility work within the roadway limits. Daytime lane closures are expected. Motorists should plan for delays.   

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews will apply line striping on the temporary southern alignment of VT 67A at Silk Road/Matteson Road to prepare for roundabout construction, and install drainage infrastructure. On Monday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will occur on VT 67A at the Silk Road/Matteson Road and College Drive intersections. On Tuesday, VT 67A traffic will shift south onto the new roadway alignment. One day next week, College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Ln) are expected to fully close at VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes.  

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project is continuing with milling operation on VT 9 between the I-91 Exit 2 interchange and the U.S. 5 (Main Street) intersection as well as beginning the paving operation on VT 142 and continuing on U.S. 5 to the I-91 Exit 1 interchange. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale, VT/NH 119 New bridge construction – Beginning mid-week, motorists should watch for shifted lanes at either end of the new bridge while crews work on the expansion joints. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed.  

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will pave side street aprons, and install bridge plug joints and rumble strips. From Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 between Park Street in Johnson and the VT 15/VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge.    

Chelsea-Washington, VT 110 Resurfacing Project – Crews will finish paving drives and installing shoulders in Chelsea by the middle of next week and install traffic markings by late next week, weather permitting. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts on VT 110 in the town of Chelsea.  

Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk and Crosswalk Installation – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the contractor is expected on-site for only a few days during the week, at which times VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for clean-up work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.  

Essex-Fairfax, VT 128 Paving – Painting and project clean-up will occur from Essex to Fairfax. Motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic from Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zones.  

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews will work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. The upstream sidewalk is closed, and pedestrians must cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.  

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between U.S. 2 and the Kennedy Drive intersection continues. Traffic control will be present with one lane of alternating travel Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. within this work area. 

Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – Browns Trace Road remains closed as bridge construction progresses. Crews will begin box cutting and backfilling the new roadway, install precast deck slabs, and continue stone armoring. Motorists should follow posted detour signs for alternate routes.  

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the contractor will continue sidewalk preparation and installation. VT 15 will be reduced to one lane during working hours with flaggers between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive, and VT 15 and Park Street.  

Lowell, VT 100 Culvert Replacement – Monday through Friday on VT 100 between VT 58 and Lower Village Road traffic control will be present for daytime lane closures allowing for one lane of alternating travel to allow for work associated with the culvert replacement.  

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing – Daily lane closures will be in place on VT 103 for sidewalk work associated with the Class 1 paving project. One-way alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers are in effect. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed. Pedestrians should watch for signed detour routes leading around closed areas on VT 103.  

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control on U.S. 7 to allow for truck traffic in and out of the work area. 

Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – The bridge over Pinney Hollow Brook, located approximately 4 miles north of VT 100 and 3 miles south of U.S. 4, is closed until August 18. VT 100A is open to the project limits from both directions, but the road is not passable end to end. A signed detour routes through traffic via VT 100 and US 4 through West Bridgewater. Travelers headed to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site or State Park should access from VT 100 in Plymouth Union. Updated signage is in place to help reduce confusion along the detour.  

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Construction of the temporary bridge piers continues. VT 100 will be open to two lanes of traffic with a lane shift in place. The gazebo parking lot has reopened.     

Richmond, U.S. 2 Bridge Replacement – Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. traffic control will be present allowing for alternate one-way traffic with minimal traffic interruptions as work continues to complete this project. 

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Road) Bridge Replacement – A one-way alternating traffic pattern will be in effect all week at the location of the bridge from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Flaggers will assist the traveling public through the work zone. Minor delays may occur. 

Rutland, Railroad Crossing – Upgrades to the railroad crossing at West and Forest Street will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. 

Rutland, U.S. 7, U.S. 4 and U.S. BUS 4 Resurfacing – Installing the new railroad crossing signal house on U.S. 7 will require a lane closure on U.S. 7 southbound between Strongs Ave and Park Street on Wednesday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. 

Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Crews continue preparing deck formwork and reinforcing steel for a concrete pour tentatively scheduled for Saturday 7/26. Traffic remains open in both directions on the bypass road, with a reduced speed limit in effect.   

Sheldon-Enosburg, VT 105 Paving – Contractors will continue to install permanent pavement markings on VT 105 between Sheldon and Enosburg. Motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Flaggers will assist motorists through the work zones.  

Springfield, VT 11 Culvert Replacement  The 40-day closure of VT 11 continues while crews replace the culvert located a quarter mile west of the intersection with VT 106. A local, signed detour is available on Park Street. Trucks must follow the regional detour signs on VT 106, VT 10, and VT 103 around the work zone. Motorists accessing roads near the construction site should watch for trucks entering and exiting the area. Pedestrians should stay on designated pathways through the work zone and be vigilant as these will change over time.     

Thetford-Fairlee, U.S. 5 Paving – Paving and shoulder work will continue next week, with crews working Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Motorists should expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and alternating one-way traffic control in active work zones, with delays likely during peak travel times. No weekend work is anticipated.   

Washington, Bridge #15 Replacement Project – Crews will set up detour signage and mobilize to the construction site in preparation for the bridge replacement work. They will also perform exploratory excavation off the road shoulder. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic on the VT 110 bridge over an unnamed brook in Washington.  

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – Bridge work continues as crews pour the concrete for the subfootings and clean off the bedrock at abutment one on the Lincoln Street side of the bridge. The bridge on Stowe Street over Thatcher Brook will remain closed to all traffic for 60 days. The signed detour will direct traffic along VT 100, U.S. 2, and Stowe Street. Motorists are asked to stay alert and not follow trucks while traveling through the work zone. 

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Milling and paving on Industrial Ave between Gail Terrace and VT 2A will require single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Traffic signal work and milling will take place on VT 2A between Meadowrun Road and Industrial Ave, with lane reductions and shifts Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and alternating one-way traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Milled surfaces are present on Industrial Ave and VT 2A. Motorists should expect significant daytime delays and plan extra travel time. 

Woodstock, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – As part of the concrete deck replacement and minor roadway approach work on the bridge over Gulf Stream just north of the junction with VT 12, crews will continue work on formwork for the bridge deck and backwalls. The road remains closed, with a signed detour in place along Stimets Road. Motorists should use caution, as the detour route is unpaved.  

Worcester, VT 12 Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews excavate for the new box culvert and begin setting the precast box pieces. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over Hardwood Brook. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours.    

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews excavate and install the cofferdam for abutment one. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.
