After reviewing weather modeling in consultation with the Burlington’s Emergency Management Director, officials have determined the forecasted temperature on Monday, January 20 meets the City’s criteria for operation of an extreme cold weather shelter.
Updated hours of operation will be Monday, January 20, Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22, from 5:00pm until 8:00am. The National Weather Service is currently forecasting evening temperatures diving well-below zero with windchill on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings, into the early morning hours on Thursday.
The State of Vermont defines an extreme cold weather emergency using a threshold of –20 degrees Fahrenheit with the windchill factor. The City is acting to open additional shelter next week based on a number of factors, including: current estimates indicate upwards of 250 people are sleeping unsheltered in the region, with many rough sleeping; lack of seasonal shelter capacity; the State motel program is at capacity with upwards of 350 eligible households unable to get a room.
The City and CVOEO are working in partnership to ensure safe operation of this emergency shelter, and we are appreciative for the funding support of the Vermont Agency of Human Services.
