Vermont Agency of Education releases Listen and Learn summary report

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Agency of Education released a summary report from the Listen and Learn Tour outlining key takeaways. Between August and December, the Agency of Education traveled around the state to engage with education leaders, educators, parents, students, and community members. In total, the Agency heard from over 1,100 Vermonters throughout the process.

“The Listen and Learn Tour allowed the Agency to gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within our education system” said Secretary of Education Zoie Saunders. “The feedback we received is not only an essential component of our strategic plan but will also help shape policies that reflect the needs and aspirations of all Vermont communities.”

The report highlights several key themes. Participants expressed the need to balance local control and statewide support, particularly around curriculum and standards, to ease the burden on school districts and promote high-quality academic outcomes.

There was a strong call for equitable access to educational opportunities, including flexible pathways and enrichment programs, mental health services, and updated facilities, especially in rural and underserved areas. The growing demand for special education services, staffing shortages, and budget pressures, highlighted the need for innovative solutions like resource sharing and regionalization.

The financial challenges facing Vermont’s education system were acknowledged as a problem that will need strong state leadership and collaboration to resolve with a focus on what is best for students.

“I want to thank every single staff member at the Agency and all the Vermonters who shared their passion and commitment to education” Saunders went on to say. “Your voice and participation have been integral to this process and in shaping our path forward.”

The full report is available on the Agency’s website and additional thoughts from the Secretary are reflected in a summary video.
