CVCOA’s long-running Memory Café hits the road

Vermont Business Magazine Central Vermont Council on Aging (CVCOA) has announced that their long-running memory café based at the Vermont History Center in Barre will now be traveling to additional communities in our service area. On January 15th, Memorable Times Café will hold its "Winter Social" at the Montpelier Senior Activity Center (MSAC) from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

“This is an affectionate homecoming,” explains Barb Asen, Director of Family Caregiver Support at CVCOA, “because our local memory café started at MSAC in January of 2014.”

The group migrated under the auspices of CVCOA to the Vermont History Center in 2018, in partnership with the ABLE Library housed in that building. In 2020, CVCOA added “Memorable Times Online” as a virtual alternative to in-person meetings. Both in-person and online programs are offered free of charge.

“Now we are hitting the road, in an effort to attract new participants and further increase accessibility by offering memory cafés at additional sites throughout our service area.”

Memory cafés are social times especially designed to provide an accepting and accessible environment that welcomes people living with dementia at any stage of symptoms – with or without official diagnosis – along with caring family members, friends and professional caregivers. People attend to participate in meaningful and joyful social experiences.

The program at MSAC this January will feature live music with room to dance, nourishing, delicious refreshments provided by CVCOA’s Nutrition program, and resources for caregivers. Additionally, CVCOA’s Community Engaged Tech Specialist will be on hand to assist people who bring their devices with connecting to Zoom so they can participate in the weekly Memorable Times Online and access other web-based resources and activities.

Future Memorable Times Café programs will travel to sites in Lamoille and Orange County. More information on both in-person and online memory cafes can be found on our website https://cvcoa.org/support-groups or by calling the CVCOA Helpline at (802) 477-1364.
