The annual initiative will return more than $150,000 to over 1,000 Vermonters
Vermont Business Magazine Today, Governor Scott and Treasurer Pieciak announced that the State will be mailing Vermonters a check for their unclaimed property this holiday season.
The MoneyBack program is an annual effort between the Treasurer’s Office and the Administration to proactively return unclaimed property to Vermonters whose identity and address can be verified by shareable Tax Department data.
This year, the program will return over $150,000 to over 1,000 Vermonters with claims ranging from $100 to $250. The average amount returned is about $150.
Vermonters included in the MoneyBack program will receive a letter from the State alerting them of the amount they will receive. Within a few days of receiving the letter, recipients will receive a check in the mail for their unclaimed property.
“The MoneyBack program shows us what’s possible when we break down silos and work together for Vermonters,” said Governor Phil Scott. “I’m appreciative of the partnership between my team at the Department of Taxes and the Treasurer’s Office on this initiative to give back to Vermonters.”
“Having a little extra money in your pocket can make all the difference this time of year. It can mean more to put toward groceries, heat, or a gift for a loved one,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “I want to thank Governor Scott and the Tax Department for their partnership in continuing MoneyBack, helping ensure Vermonters can worry less about their budgets this holiday season and focus on what matters most—spending time with family.”
Unclaimed property includes lost checks, forgotten security deposits, investments, and other financial property. Entities annually report these assets and turn them over to the State. The Treasurer's Office safeguards them until claimed by rightful owners or their heirs. Unclaimed property can belong to individuals, businesses, nonprofits, government entities, and more.
The Treasurer’s Office currently holds over $150 million in unclaimed property. In FY25, the office’s Unclaimed Property Division returned nearly $10 million to Vermonters across 30,000 individual claims. Both were the most ever returned in a fiscal year. Despite this progress, a record-$24 million in unclaimed property was turned over to the State.
"When we return unclaimed property to Vermonters, that’s money back to families, small businesses, and our economy,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “As the total missing money held by the State keeps rising, our office will continue creating innovative partnerships like MoneyBack to reunite more Vermonters with their hard-earned cash.”
Governor Scott and Treasurer Pieciak would like to thank Commissioner Shouldice and his staff at the Department of Taxes for their hard work and partnership in helping rightfully return these funds to Vermonters before the holidays.
All Vermonters are encouraged to visit missingmoney.com to check for unclaimed property. For inquiries regarding a claim or assistance with the claims process, contact the Treasurer’s Office Unclaimed Property Division at (802) 828-2407 or [email protected].
