AOT Road Construction Report for the week of August 18

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 18, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.    

Interstates:     

Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements  Crews will install traffic signals on U.S. 2, install line striping on I-89 south near Exit 17, Exit 17 southbound ramps, and the new U.S. 2 bridge, and conduct milling on U.S. 7 and I-89 northbound off-ramp. From Monday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on I-89 southbound. U.S. 7 between the Shell gas station and Wiley Road will have lane closures and shifts, with the potential for alternating one-way traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. On Wednesday afternoon, traffic will shift onto the new U.S. 2 bridge and roadway alignment.    

Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. A temporary crossover is in effect. Beginning approximately a quarter mile in advance of the Exit 15 interchange, traffic is reduced to a single lane in both directions and being diverted onto I-91 North. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect.  

Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – A full closure of I-91 South at Exit 16 is in effect. All southbound traffic must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place along the detour route at the intersection of U.S. 5 and Bridge Street. Delays may occur. Rolling roadblocks on the northbound side of the interstate will be in effect in the early part of the week.  

Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Crews are removing existing surface pavement and paving two separate courses of pavement. Motorists should expect major delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. Motorists should also expect uneven lanes and a milled surface in the travel lane. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.    

Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. During ramp construction, ramps will be narrowed, and flaggers will manage traffic to allow equipment and trucks to access the work zone. Expect minor delays. Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. Traffic on VT 107 will be diverted due to stripping operations, with a 30 mph speed limit and a 14-foot height restriction.  

Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving operations continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Final paving of the northbound ramps of Exits 21 and 22 will require narrowed and shifted lanes and motorists should be vigilant. Stormwater improvement work will be conducted off Exit 21 and on VT 78. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.  

State Highways:   

Barre Town–Orange–Topsham, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Motorists should expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic as paving of the wearing course begins 8/19, starting at the Barre City end of the project. Moderate delays are anticipated.    

Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Main Street, along with a possible short-term closure and detour of Morgan Street at its intersection with Main Street. Utility crews may relocate overhead lines during the day, with underground utility work taking place overnight.    

Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction  Crews will pave, set drainage structures, begin installing curb, and work on shoulders along the north side of VT 67A and roadway approaches for College Drive and Matteson Road. From Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with the potential for intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. College Drive and Matteson Road are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes, until approximately late September 2025.  

Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project is continuing paving and utility structure work throughout downtown Brattleboro. The paving operation will continue on U.S. 5 (Canal Street) and work zones will also be present on U.S. 5 (Main Street), VT 30 (Linden Street), and VT 9 (Western Ave and High Street). Between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday night through Saturday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through multiple work zones. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours throughout the work zones. Pedestrians should be vigilant for sidewalk detours. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures and wet paint.  

Brookfield, VT 14 Culvert Replacement – Traffic will be reduced to one lane overnight and during working hours. This week, crews will continue installing the new culvert and excavating the road subbase after completing cutoff walls on both sides of the box culvert.   

Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will be on-site periodically to install line striping and signs and clean culverts on VT 15 between the VT 100C intersection in the Village of Johnson and the VT 15 /VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge from Monday through Friday, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic. Crews will be off the roadway from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on VT 15 in the Village of Johnson.  

Elmore, VT 12 Bridge Replacement – Bridge work will resume as crews deliver materials to the project site and continue to build the temporary roadway. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on VT 12 near the intersection of VT 12, Camp Road, and Boat Launch Road.   

Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.    

Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between the Hinesburg/St. George line and Tilley Drive continues with traffic control present Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas. Motorists should expect delays.    

Jericho, Browns Trace Town Bridge Replacement – The bridge is reopening to traffic on Friday 8/15. As crews complete the final work, the bridge will be open to one lane of alternating traffic during work hours. Motorists are advised to use caution. 

Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., crews will be paving driveway aprons and placing sidewalk. VT 15 will be reduced to one lane during working hours, with flaggers, between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive. and VT 15 and Park Street.   

Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing Daytime single-lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for paving and shoulder work associated with the Class 1 paving project. Flaggers will control one-way alternating traffic patterns.   

Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control on U.S. 7 to allow for truck traffic in and out of the work area, and lane shifts on the southern end of the project.   

Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – Regional signage will be updated to reflect the re-opening of VT 100A (planned for 8/14) that restored through-traffic between Plymouth Union and Bridgewater Corners. Construction activities will continue for the next several weeks under daily lane closures, with traffic stopped and released by temporary signals. Drivers should proceed with caution, as workers will be in close proximity and road surfaces will remain uneven until final paving is completed. Travelers headed to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site or State Park can continue to access from VT 100 in Plymouth Union.    

Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement over the Deerfield River, single-lane closures on Depot Street will be in place throughout the week, managed by flaggers. A 24/7 lane shift will provide space for bridge assembly, and drivers should expect intermittent delays of up to 15 minutes while sections of the temporary bridge are pushed into place.    

Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – U.S. 5 (Missing Link Road) is fully closed .3 miles north of VT 103 and is currently on schedule to reopen Monday, 8/24 at 7:00 a.m. A vehicular detour is in place along U.S. 5 to I -91 (between exits 6 and 7) and back to U.S. 5. The bicycle detour utilizes VT 103, Parker Hill Rd., O'Brien Rd., Alden Rd. and U.S. 5.  

Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Traffic remains open in both directions on the bypass road, with a reduced speed limit in effect through the work zone.  

Springfield, VT 11 Culvert Replacement  The 40-day closure of VT 11 near Fairground Road and the intersection with VT 106 has ended and the road is open to all traffic. One-way alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be in place through the work zone during daytime hours while crews continue to work in the area.  

Swanton, VT-78 Stormwater Improvement Project  One-lane alternating traffic patterns controlled by flaggers will be present on VT-78 at various locations between Robin Hood Drive/Missisquoi Street and Lafar Street while crews work on headwalls and the ditches adjacent to the roadway.  

Thetford-Fairlee, U.S. 5 Paving – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic control near active work zones, as well as limited pavement markings and low shoulders. Work will take place during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.    

Washington, VT 110 Bridge #15 Replacement Project – VT 110 between Pray Road and Poor Farm Road at Bridge #15 over an unnamed brook is closed for approximately three weeks to perform the bridge replacement. The contractor will be setting the precast concrete structure next week, weather permitting. Traffic is detoured onto VT 14 for the duration of the 23-day closure. Motorists are advised to adhere to all posted signage for detour routes.  

Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – As part of the bridge replacement project, roadway reconstruction is underway on Lincoln Street and Stowe Street as crews install stormwater infrastructure and utilities. On the Stowe Street Town Bridge, crews will install the concrete and steel combination rail. Lincoln Street remains closed to all vehicular traffic. The signed detour will direct traffic to Perry Hill Road, Kneeland Flats Road, and Guptil Road. The bridge on Stowe Street over Thatcher Brook remains closed to all traffic for the 60-day closure. The signed detour will direct traffic along VT 100, U.S. 2, and Stowe Street. Motorists should anticipate delays along VT 100 in Waterbury and are encouraged to plan accordingly.  

Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will conduct sidewalk and driveway apron work and adjust drainage structures on Industrial Ave. From Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., the VT 2A southbound right-turn-only lane onto Industrial Avenue will be intermittently closed. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers will be in effect between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Industrial Avenue between Gail Terrace and VT 2A. Motorists should expect significant daytime delays and plan extra travel time or consider alternate routes.     

Woodstock, FAS Route 166/Pomfret Road, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – As part of the concrete deck replacement and minor roadway approach work on the bridge over Gulf Stream just north of the junction with VT 12, Pomfret Road will remain closed this week, with a signed detour along Stimets Road. Motorists should use caution, as the detour route is unpaved. This week, crews will strip backwall forms, backfill to the subbase, and prepare approach slabs for reinforcing steel.    

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews form and pour the concrete for abutment one. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.    

Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews remove the temporary roadway. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary roadway over the new box culvert on VT 12 over Hardwood Brook. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours.
