Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will affect traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of August 4, 2025. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
Colchester, I-89 Exit 17 Interchange Improvements – Crews continue work on the new U.S. 2 bridge and traffic signals at the U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 intersection. From Monday through Friday, I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours: 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on I-89 southbound.
Fairlee, I-91 Bridge Deck Replacement – Replacement of the I-91 South bridge deck over Lake Morey Road continues. A temporary crossover is in effect. Beginning approximately a quarter mile in advance of the Exit 15 interchange, traffic is reduced to a single lane in both directions and being diverted onto I-91 North. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect.
Fairlee, I-91 Southbound Ledge Stabilization – A full closure of Interstate-91 South at Exit 16 is in effect. All southbound traffic will need to exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. Route 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place along the detour route at the intersection of U.S. 5 and Bridge Street. Delays may occur. Rolling roadblocks on the northbound side of the interstate will be in effect throughout the week.
Montpelier-Waterbury, I-89 South Paving – Crews are removing existing surface pavement and paving two separate courses of pavement. Motorists should expect major delays during peak travel hours due to the southbound lane closures from Exit 10 to Exit 8. Motorists should also expect uneven lanes and a milled surface in the travel lane. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the project limits and fines will be doubled.
Royalton, I-89 Bridge Rehabilitation – On I-89 near Exit 3 in Royalton, construction activities continue related to the northbound bridge rehabilitation. Traffic is reduced to a single lane. Southbound traffic will use the travel lane, while northbound traffic crosses the median and returns north past the bridges. The Exit 3 North off-ramp uses a crossover to the new ramp. Speed limits are 55 mph in work zones and 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit on VT 107 is reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction.
Swanton-Highgate, I-89 Paving and Stormwater Improvement Projects – Paving and stormwater improvement projects continue on I-89 where a temporary speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place across multiple work zones during working hours. Daily lane closures will be in place on I-89 North and South from Exit 20 to the Canadian border. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
State Highways:
Barre Town–Orange, U.S. 302 Resurfacing – Sign installation will continue progressing from Orange to Topsham. Motorists should expect multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic. Survey staff will be performing layout throughout the project in preparation for final paving.
Bennington, VT 67A Roundabout Construction – Crews will continue excavating and installing drainage infrastructure at the College Drive and Matteson Road intersections with VT 67A. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.to 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on VT 67A along the temporary southern alignment, with potential for intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. College Drive and Matteson Road are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes, until approximately late September 2025.
Bennington, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – Utility crews may relocate overhead utility lines, and underground utility work may also occur within the roadway limits. Daytime lane closures are expected. Motorists should plan for delays.
Brattleboro, U.S. 5, VT 142, VT 9, and VT 30 Resurfacing – A Class 1 night paving project continues with milling and paving operations throughout downtown Brattleboro. The paving operation will continue on VT 9 between the I-91 Exit 2 interchange and the signalized intersection at U.S. 5. Milling will begin on VT 30 near the intersection with Cedar Street and continue toward U.S. 5 (Main Street). From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Saturday morning, traffic will be reduced to a single lane and flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns. Parking restrictions will be enforced during working hours throughout the work zones. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces, and all motorists should watch for elevated utility structures in the travel lanes and shoulders.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale, VT/NH 119 New Bridge Construction – Motorists should watch for shifted lanes at either end of the new bridge while crews work on the expansion joints. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed.
Cambridge-Johnson, VT 15 Resurfacing – Crews will be on-site periodically to clean culverts and conduct shoulder work on VT 15 between the VT 100C intersection in the Village of Johnson and the VT 15 /VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge from Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic. Crews will be off the roadway from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on VT 15 in the Village of Johnson.
Chelsea-Washington, VT 110 Resurfacing Project – The contractor will finish plug joints on the two bridges in Chelsea Village, weather permitting. Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists should anticipate minor traffic impacts on VT 110 in Chelsea.
Enosburg Falls, VT 105 Sidewalk and Crosswalk Installation – Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., crews are expected on-site only a few days during the week. VT 105 could be reduced to one lane intermittently with flaggers for cleanup work near the intersections of VT 105 and Water Tower Road, and VT 105 and Pleasant Street.
Essex-Fairfax, VT 128 Paving – Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic in work zones on VT 128 between Essex and Fairfax for shoulder aggregate work. Flaggers will be present to assist drivers through the work zones.
Hartford, U.S. 4 Quechee Gorge Bridge Project – Crews continue work on the north side of the bridge. One-way alternating traffic controlled by a traffic signal is in place. Pedestrians must also cross on the south side of the bridge. Those walking from the gift shop lot to the southern sidewalk must cross at the visitor center crosswalk. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.
Hinesburg-South Burlington, VT 116 Resurfacing Project – Work between U.S. 2 and the Hinesburg/St. George town line continues with traffic control present Sunday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. allowing for one lane of alternating travel within the work areas. Motorists should expect delays.
Jericho, Browns Trace Road Town Bridge Replacement – Browns Trace Road remains closed as bridge construction progresses. Crews will continue stone fill for swales, install conduit and pull boxes, backfill approach slabs, and prep the road for asphalt. Motorists should continue to follow posted detour signs for alternate routes.
Jericho, VT 15 Sidewalk Project – This project includes the installation of new sidewalk, crosswalks, and rapid flashing beacons along and across VT Route 15 between Jericho Market Drive and Park Street intersections. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., crews will continue sidewalk preparation, grading, and placement. VT 15 will be one lane during working hours, with flaggers, between the intersections of VT 15 and Jericho Market Drive, and VT 15 and Park Street.
Lowell, VT 100 Culvert Replacement – Monday through Friday on VT 100 between VT 58 and Lower Village Road traffic control will be present for daytime lane closures allowing for one lane of alternating travel to allow for work associated with the culvert replacement.
Ludlow, VT 100 and VT 103 Resurfacing – Single-lane closures will be in place on VT 103 and VT 100S for daytime paving associated with the Class 1 paving project. Flaggers will control one-way alternating traffic patterns and intersections. Sidewalk detours will be in place as needed.
Pittsford, U.S. 7 Bridge Replacement – For this bridge replacement project at the intersection of U.S. 7 and VT 3, motorists can expect traffic control on U.S. 7 to allow for truck traffic in and out of the work area.
Plymouth, VT 100A Bridge Replacement – The bridge over Pinney Hollow Brook, located approximately 4 miles north of VT 100 and 3 miles south of US 4, is closed until August 18. VT 100A is open to the project limits from both directions, but the road is not passable end to end. A signed detour routes through traffic via VT 100 and US 4 through West Bridgewater. Travelers headed to the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site or State Park should access from VT 100 in Plymouth Union. Updated signage is in place to guide motorists through the detour.
Readsboro, VT 100 Bridge Replacement – Construction of the temporary bridge pier towers continues. Depot Street will be lowered to gravel surface and reduced to one lane controlled by flaggers.
Rockingham, U.S. 5 (Missing Link Rd.) Bridge Replacement – U.S. 5 (Missing Link Road) is fully closed for a duration of 28 days. Demolition of the existing bridge has begun. A vehicular detour is in place along U.S. 5 to I -91 (between exits 6 and 7) and back to U.S. 5. The bicycle detour utilizes VT 103, Parker Hill Rd., O'Brien Rd., Alden Rd. and U.S. 5.
Rutland, Railroad Crossing – Sign installation and railroad crossing signal work at West and Forest Street will require intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Searsburg, VT 9 Bridge Replacement – While the concrete deck cures through August 5, crews will begin box cutting on the west side and hauling material, with form stripping and abutment backfilling to follow. Traffic remains open in both directions on the bypass road, with a reduced speed limit in effect.
Springfield, VT 11 Culvert Replacement – The 40-day closure of VT 11 continues while crews replace the culvert located a quarter mile west of the intersection with VT 106. A local, signed detour is available on Park Street. Trucks will need to follow the regional detour signs on VT 106, VT 10, and VT 103 around the work zone. Flaggers will be present at the intersection with Fairground Road where one-way traffic patterns will be implemented as needed and delays are anticipated. Pedestrian access through the work zone has been established on the north side of the project and pedestrians are reminded to stay on the designated pathways and remain vigilant.
Washington, VT 110 Bridge Replacement Project – Crews will excavate and remove ledge in preparation for placement of footings for the new precast concrete box/frame. VT 110 between Pray Road and Poor Farm Road at Bridge #15 over an unnamed brook remains closed as part of a three-week bridge closure. During the closure, traffic is detoured along VT 110 to U.S. 302 to VT 14 back to VT 110. Motorists are advised to adhere to all posted signage for detour routes.
Waterbury, Stowe Street Town Bridge Replacement – Bridge work continues as crews set the precast footings and frame. The bridge on Stowe Street over Thatcher Brook will remain closed to all traffic for the 60-day closure. The signed detour will direct traffic along VT 100, U.S. 2, and Stowe Street. Motorists should stay alert and not follow trucks while traveling through the work zone.
Williston, VT 2A and Industrial Ave Intersection Roadway Widening – Crews will continue with traffic signal work at the VT 2A and Industrial Ave intersections, and curb work on Industrial Ave. From Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., the VT 2A southbound right-turn-only lane at Industrial Avenue will be intermittently closed. Alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers may be in effect at the VT 2A and Industrial Ave intersection between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Industrial Avenue between Gail Terrace and VT 2A will be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Motorists should expect significant daytime delays and plan extra travel time.
Woodstock, Town Bridge Deck Replacement – As part of the concrete deck replacement and minor roadway approach work on the bridge over Gulf Stream just north of the junction with VT 12, crews will continue work on formwork for the bridge deck and backwalls. The road remains closed, with a signed detour in place along Stimets Road. Motorists should use caution, as the detour route is unpaved.
Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews pave the one-way temporary roadway and begin removing the temporary bridge. On Tuesday 8/6, traffic will shift from the temporary bridge to a one-way temporary road on the new box culvert on the VT 12 bridge over Hardwood Brook. Following the traffic shift, motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary roadway. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area during working hours. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone during non-working hours.
Worcester, VT 12 Bridge and Culvert Replacement – Culvert work will continue as crews form and place concrete for abutment one, wingwall one, and wingwall two. Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on the temporary bridge over the North Branch of the Winooski River. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic through the work zone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Flaggers may also be present to assist motorists through the area.
