Mahdawi, student at Columbia University and Vermont resident, was arrested at his naturalization interview in retaliation for his First Amendment protected speech
Vermont Business Magazine On Wednesday, April 23, Judge Crawford will hear oral arguments in Burlington, Vermont regarding Mohsen Mahdawi’s habeas petition and motion for release on bail at 9:00 AM.
Mr. Mahdawi is a lawful permanent resident of the United States who has lived in Vermont for 10 years and is set to graduate from Columbia University in May. ICE detained him during his long-awaited naturalization hearing on April 14. Mr. Mahdawi was targeted by the Trump administration in direct retaliation for his advocacy of Palestinian rights.
After apprehending him, ICE attempted to put him on a plane to Louisiana, but a temporary restraining order filed by Judge Sessions compelled the government to keep Mr. Mahdawi in Vermont until his habeas case is resolved.
Mohsen Mahdawi is represented by Cyrus Mehta and David Isaacson of Cyrus D. Mehta & Partners, PLLC and Luna Droubi of Beldock Levine & Hoffman LLP.
Tomorrow, Judge Crawford will hear arguments on Mr. Mahdawi’s habeas petition and the motion for release. The hearing is only accessible in-person and there will be a press gaggle afterward with Mr. Mahdawi’s attorneys.
